High ADSL ping at around midnight

Hi Guys,

I have a very odd problem with my ADSL line.

I often play BF4 on PS4 in the evenings until about 1am. I get very good pings for most of the evenings until around midnight when everything goes horribly wrong. My game starts to lag terribly and my ping shoots through the roof (>1000ms)!!

I've done a tracert when this occurs and the lag is entirely down to the second hop. Resetting the router does not fix the problem. The lag lasts for about 20minutes whereafter everything returns back to normal....

Does anybody have some advice on what can be the problem? I don't believe it to be exchange congestion.

I've tried different routers but this does not solve the problem. Current router is a D-link 2750U.

My line is a 4mb line with a 3mb uncapped OpenWeb account. I stay in Sunningdale, Cape Town. I'll post a tracert when I experience this issue again.

ISPs releasing shaping on P2P at that time perhaps? And automated downloads firing off?

I'm on a brand new exchange that should not be congested. But I suppose it can still be the result of multiple downloads starting...

I'm also going to try a 1gig trial account from Afrihost and see if the same happens.

I can imagine how the different ISPs would deal with this

TI would ignore you
MWEB would schedule an expert to call you
OW would blame Telkom
AH would ask for a tracert
Axxess would blame IPC

Afihost and Openweb accounts gave the same results.

I've tried a very old Billion w40 router that seems to fix my problem. Will test further and report back.
