Hi, I wonder if someone can help. Daughter has bought a new laptop and is away at University. For two months in a row she has had extremely high broadband usuage via a Vodafone,NZ stick. They said something must be running in the background but could not tell her what. Of course I am having to pay the bill. I got her to turn off automatic Windows Updates. Can someone suggest what else to turn off? Any help is much appreciated. When I can get a holder of her I will let you know what the Anti Virus CD is she was sold with the computer. Many thanks.

They normally don't ship good anti-virus with laptops these days so best to tell her to download avg free and let it do a scan to find any viruses.
Can you please tell us what version of Windows she has?
Does she have firewall enabled?
How sure are you she is not going to youtube a lot and actually using a lot of bandwidth? Non-technical users are usually not aware how much bandwidth music and videos use and even lots of browsing on picture sites take up a lot of bandwidth.
Another thing: can you not cap it at a certain amount? In SA, we have "top up" packages which prevent excessive usage on contracts by stopping all services after an amount is reached

I agree with what Nic mentioned, a lot of people don't get how much data certain things actually take up.
Such as browsing you tube, takes up a fair amount of data, so an hour on youtube and wam you looking at a couple hundred megs.

Her laptop can also be home to a spambot, zombie or trojan which sends out endless garbage and use up your bandwidth.

Do you realise the size of pics most people store? Often 3 or 4Mgs each. Thats what I find with my daughters laptop and so ten matric dance photos = 40Mg
