hey guys

need some help. recently my i5 2500k has started using one core at 90 percent all the time....in task manager system idle stays between 60 and 75 cpu usage and the only other cpu hogger is kaspersky which is using 25... is there a reason one core is overworking? it's not always the same core...it switches betweeen them

any advice appreciated

Assuming Win 7, open up the Resource Monitor (in the Performance tab of the Task Manager).

Under the CPU tab, you should get more detailed information about what is causing the high CPU usage.

You can also use a progam called Process Explorer, iirc, to get similar informatoin.

ok used process explorer and it seems the only cpu hog is kaspersky...

Try switching to something like Microsoft Security Essentials.

Or NOD32. Anti-virus companies soon go into "security" which soon turns into a bloated piece of **** hogging resources, like Norton. Never had a problem OR a virus while using NOD32 for the past 7 years or so

Yeah just get a detailed run down of every process that's running from the System Manager and eliminate them one by one.

Try and look in your bios. I know there are settings in your bios that can allow for only a single core to be utilised, therefore you might have accidentally set it to utilise a single core (while changing other settings) without realising it, or maybe someone else could of been fiddling in your bios and accidentally changed it.

Just check it out, could be a long shot, but it is possible.

thanks for the help guys...figured out it was kaspersky. it seems the 2011 version has a weird glitch that chews on one core all the time. updated to 2012 and it seems to have fixed it
