I have a moto defy with 2.2 froyo.

this month I got a high mtn account. R600 for data. I use wifi at home and then only watchapp.

My data use to be R10 to R50 but now it jumped.
The data meter said my gallery and and wifi hotspot uses the most data. I am going to uninstall wifi hotspot now.

Any tips please.

Don't think you can uninstall wifi hotspot, its a standard phone feature that you do however need to manually turn on.

Its for using your phone as well... a hotspot, so other devices can connect to it and use its data. If another device is using your phones internet then the R550 usage jump is surprising only in the sense that it realistically should of been much more.

Gallery would only be using data if you enabled photo sync, the native gallery has the option to sync your photos up to picasa, as far as I know it does not have the "on wifi only" option. I never use the stock gallery, use either quick pick or album and freeze the stock gallery.

@abzo, i think he meant whatsapp.

It might be an app that is running some sort of sync or update or just using the net in the background. Try see what you installed since it started happening then thoroughly check those apps to make sure the are not synching or updating something.

Ockie you legend you. That is a great app, I'll definately recommend that app. Is it 100% accurate though?

Seems to be pretty accurate on my RAZR. You should thank Elimentals though. Heard about Onavo from him. For ICS phones they have another app called Onavo Extend that enables compression on your phone to save data (almost like Blackberry). Looking forward to trying it once my RAZR is upgraded to ICS.

Thanks, I have a tablet running android. I'm going to try it first thing when i get home, I hope the app will serve it's purpose. I want an app that can monitor each device's usage i.e. calculate each device's data usage which will allow me to bill a certain user per session for internet cafe purposes.

That is better done at server level

Thanks, will also try it.
i install root firewall last night. since then use 1.25mb.
Receive 1 gmail reminder and did not use anything else today. ok clock went off, receive 5 phone calls.

When I first got my previous Android phone (Galaxy Ace) it chowed R150 airtime in two days.

- Disable all syncing
- Disable mobile data when not in use
- Install Onavo or My Data Manager (I use the latter - gives wifi stats as well)
- Disable all backup options

I could not connect to google play. Had to stop the firewall. That is funny, because play should connect with wifi ?

any comments on this please.

Give Play full internet access but inside Play app restrict updates/downloads to wifi only. <--- that is what I do with MIUI's firewall set-up and it works for me.

So thank you everyone, for saving me money and battery life.

Elimentals, what do you do, seeing that you seems to be mr Android.

Well as mentioned before I use MIUIv4 a rom that has a build in firewall and monitor app.

I can limit any application to only use 3G or WiFi or both and it also gives me a run down of what each app consumed. Old screenshots Here

As for the Mr Android comment, I do not see myself as such just a power user, there are others on this list thats more worthy of that title.
