I'm planning a high end SEO "conference" in the new year for people who actually know something about SEO. More like a Staaldraad for geeks.

I'm still in the early planning stages but it will go something like this...

It will only be open to about 20 people and probably take place over 2 days. There will be no fees or registration costs. The only financial outlay will be the cost of a venue split evenly amongst participants. Each participant will be required to give a presentation on one aspect of SEO that they are strongest in.

After each presentation there will be a prolonged Q&A/discussion/debate/brawl for as long as it takes for all to reach a consensus or at least learn all there is to learn from all the others in the room.

Presentations will be on topics such as keyword research, advanced link building techniques, automation, latent semantics and latent dirchlet allocation, social strategies, grey/blackhat techniques etc, etc .

Anybody interested? Let me know.

I'm in Joburg, but I'd like to locate it somewhere else like Natal or something (a good excuse for a getaway as well as a legitimate, company endorsed learning experience) so I'm open to sugestions.

Lol, I've been doing lots of research in SEO, but I don't know nearly enough to give a presentation to other SEO pros. I just enjoy SEO that's all. I'm currently working on my parent's website http://www.anythingcanvas.co.za, but it being on a mweb hosting package, I'm very restricted. What I'm doing at the moment is trying to rank the website first for specific Google search terms, by optimizing the website's homepage, and posting a link on free online directories. I've got 2 terms in the bag so far, but there's still plenty to go. Got to take it slow.

Zoinks! I don't want to diss your efforts, but I'm surprised you getting any search engine love at all... You say you are restricted on a Mweb hosting package, but your choice of host means nothing. I think you mean you are using one of those aweful site builder tools and I'd dump that if I were you. Go with a simple Wordpress install (free). The latest version is WP 3.02 and it's as close as dammit to a fully fledged CMS with practically no learning curve. There are some brilliant free themes and plugins that you can install with 1 or 2 clicks and nobody will even know that it's a WordPress site.

Would you like me to post a quick personalised SEO tutorial for your site? If yes, I will include a couple of links to some tools and software that I recomend (just throwing that in before trolls start crying about sales pages that are more than a page long) but mostly just simple "on the page" changes that you can action immediatly.

So, if you search google.co.za from php hosting, what do you get? About 120,000,000 results - Do I qualify?

By the way, on page SEO isnt important, I rank for other sites with other keywords, without any links on the page, no keywords, with only 1 keyword in the body copy of about 250 words and an untitled description... This was a test, by the way... basically just to see if I could. Im not dissing on page completely, just saying, you CAN rank without it.

Im not into SEO at all, I just read a PDF or two and Im pretty sure I dont have the time to take or present classes. I'll just go on as I do. Seems to be working somewhat.

I would be very interested in attending. I know almost nothing about SEO, but it is something I would really like to explore and get some in-depth knowledge about SEO.

Some terms are easier to rank for than others. I've ranked some pages with on page optimisation only and others with off page only, but as the terms get more competitive you have to do both and do both WELL. For hyper competitive terms like "viagra" or "casino" you have to be prepared to move into darker territory as well.

Google announced page load speed is now an official part of the algorithm a couple of months back. Not super important, but really worth looking at if you need to overtake a site or 2 to get the #1 spot.

@shakes - if we open up to noobs for a fee, instead of contibuting by way of presentation, do you think there will be any interest? What do you think will be a fair price?

I know that SES New York costs around $2500 (excluding airfare, hotels etc). I think R1000 or R2000 for non teachers would be a fair cost in SA - maybe more if there are real tips and strategies and stuff that people could do right away.

 WOW, browsing through the source of that page was SCARY AS HELL. I haven't seen so many " "s or FONT tags in a website in many many many years.

It uses the Genesis 2 Self Build package - R400 per month (yeah I know...RIPOFF!). I don't have access to the website's cPanel account, or anything of the sort, only admin access to genesis2.mweb.co.za. What I'm working on at the moment is a replacement for their current website using an open source CMS, but I'm looking for a simple one that won't intimidate my parents. The reason for the screwed up page source would be my use of Mweb's buggy WYSIWYG editor. For now I'm trying out CMS Made Simple.

Waaaay to expensive. For me a good fee would be R200. But I hope you're marketing the event in more places that just myBB.

R400/pm??? I hope they at least supply the vaseline!

Get a cheap cpanel account (don't pay more than R50 per month), use WordPress as your CMS. It's MORE than enough for the type of site you have and it's the easiest, least intimidating CMS available - even MY parents can use it!!

I haven't even considered marketing the SEO "conference yet" - it was just supposed to be a high level brainstorm for a few people in the biz. If enough people are interested it may be worthwhile to charge an entrace fee for noobs and maybe even throw in a day or 2 of basic training to bring them up to speed.

Gotta say I wouldn't even consider it for R200. I have spent hundreds of thousands of rands and many years of time to learn what I know. I charge upwards of R10 000 per month for my SEO services so I won't give this knowledge away for free, and the same goes for the other guys who will be there.

That high price you charge should be for people who have no time but lots of money. All one really needs is Google, time, and a desire to learn.

I wouldn't mind paying, provided it is a reasonable figure. Depends if accomodation, food, etc is included. But I would honestly consider if there was a fee.
