High idle whilst moving

Hey all.

I drive a Tata Indica.

Lately had the engine overhauled with a new watrerpump etc, because it overheated.

So what happens is the car revs high, est. 1200 revs, when the wheels are turning whether in gear (coasting) or not, but lowers to normal, est. 800 when stopped.

As per normal startup cold revs high to heat the engine but, honestly haven't tested whether it drops down stable to 800 revs but we assume this happens.

I can't ask my mechanic who sorted out the engine overhaul because he's given me conflicting information and he's left town (going through a divorce).

Any suggestions on what professional I should be taking the car to or what kind of tuning I could possibly implement?

Cheers thanks very much. It adds to the petrol bill and stress.

I had something similar but not entirely the same
Turned out I had a crack in 1 of the air hoses. Whatever the technical term is. Luckily all i had to do was cut off a 1cm piece and re-insert it. It happened after a friend of mine who is a bull in a china shop changed out all the belts in my car straight after i bought it.

good luck

I can give you a PDF copy of the 2003-2005 CityRover Workshop Manual (which is just a Tata Indica with a chrome Rover grille & badging) - that should help you out with any DIY maintenance you want to do to your car. PM Me and I will send you a OneDrive link to download it.

Mafam [airflow] sensor could be dirty. If it indeed has one.

If it does, spray the 2 filaments with electric cleaner - do not use oil based spray WD 40, carb cleaner and the like.

Another option could be speed sensor faulty. That one you would need to use an ohm meter to test.

You mean the throttle position sensor?

I thought of that sensor too. I know my vehicle has an analogue Speedo, reads off the transfer box [4WD] and can't recall if it has a speed sensor. It certainly has a TPS.

Without a speed sensor, how would the computer box know the vehicle is indeed moving? Unless it uses the RPM figure, I dunno.

There is a speed sensor on the gearbox and a TPS, which is connected to the throttle body, the resistance varies as the butterfly thing is opened and closed through the accelerator input, it is a spring loaded variable resistor and sometimes it gives up with wear and tear.

Last time I had high idle issues it was this. The idle control valve usually results in low idle but no harm in cleaning it.

My TPS caused an opposite to OP issue. I would be driving at say100km and all of a sudden, and intermittently, the fuel supply to the injectors was cut off. Turn outs the TPS variable mechanism was losing contact at a certain throttle position (wear and tear) and the computer box read it as I had lifted my foot from pedal.

I can only imagine that mine failed open, car was revving at over 4000rpm permanently. I still don't understand why the computer did not ignore it and use some default values.

Have a google for where the Manifold Pressure Sensor is, find its vacuum tube and make sure its got no cracks or leaks.
