Hey guys,
I have had it with high latencies whilst gaming online
Story:
Last year I had a latency of between 55-70ms when gaming online. I still had it till about a month ago when one evening, my internet disconnected(was still sync'd with the exchange, PPP light just went off) while playing COD4 online. It came back on 2h 30min later and I had magical pings which I first had when I got ADSL back at the end of 2006. I had a ping of 38ms-45ms. I couldn't believe my luck and I was at last a happy camper.
About a week ago, one evening (Wednesday) the PPP light went out again for 10 mins, came back on, decided to do a ping test and farking latency was now even worse than it was !!!
Now, swear words cannot describe my disgust when I noticed this.
The next day, Thursday afternoon at 12 o clock, my PPP light went off again, thought I'd give it 2 hours + to come back on seeing that the previous time they fixed it and it came back on. This time round I wasn't so lucky.
So I decided to give the Beast a call on 375 375, and got through after 45mins. Logged a call with a consultant, who asked me tedious questions as to where did I purchase my router and what brand, luckily I didn't swear at him. He told me that at my exchange traffic wasn't coming into my exchange..since 12 o clock like I first reported. Great, logged a fault, and decided that I'll power down my router. Turned back on 2 hours later, since I had to go and mow the lawn.
When I powered back on, my internet was restored again, YET the crap latencies remained. So on came Friday, once again at 12 o clock, my internet went down again... but came back on 30mins later. Later that afternoon, at about 16:15, I went down again, came back on 16:35. Saturday, same story, went down again at both the exact time slots and came back on again.
On Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday I got sms updates, saying, blah blah fault isn't resovled yada yada. Went Tuesday to Telkom Direct, stated my case, and got a techie assigned to my fault. At this point I was fed up, but what can I do. Before the techie arrived, I noticed my PPP and ADSL lights went out on my router. Picked up my phone, it was completely dead.
When I saw his bakkie, it was one of techies that repairs lines at the pole, with the flattop at the back of the bakkie. It wasn't the bakkie that had a canopy at the back. I told him my phone is dead, he was furious at himself, went back to the exchange to fix his mess.
Came back and my line was working again. Keep in mind, nothing was even wrong with my line in the first place, yet he still pulls cables and crap out at the exchange and plugs it back in again. At this point, I was experiencing another pain in the butt in the form of loadshedding so I couldn't test if my DSL was working.
Power came back on, I was optimistic that I would have lower pings, but alas this wasn't the case.Got my sms status update, fault has been resolved...YAY !!!!!.... not.
End of story
Okay, so now that some of you maybe sleeping at this point, reading my short novel, WHAT CAN I DO TO GET MY LATENCY LOWER ?
Let me post some tracert results here. Keep in mind I don't know that other IP to ping (will do a search, or someone post it for me), so I generally use tpr-route-server.saix.net
Here is one with my IS based account:
Tracing route to tpr-route-server.saix.net [196.25.9.46]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

Trace complete.
With my SAIX account:
Tracing route to tpr-route-server.saix.net [196.25.9.46]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 3 ms 1 ms 1 ms home.gateway [192.168.1.254]

3 72 ms 72 ms 69 ms tpr-ip-esr-1-ge-6-0-0.telkom-ipnet.co.za [196.43
.10.86]
4 71 ms 73 ms 72 ms tpr-route-server.saix.net [196.25.9.46]
Trace complete.
Okay, one thing of note. With my SAIX account at the 2nd traceroute where I get the * * * at my friends' places they get something like the following(ping values are just for example purposes)
NOTE: Both of them also have SAIX accounts with the exact same ISP as me
70ms 71ms 71ms dsl-41.224-telkom-ipnet.co.za
How come do they get a DNS reply at the second test, but mine ALWAYS give me * * * Request time out.
Ok since my incident of internet going out, 2 of my friends who are on the same exchange, but in a different suburb than me, also have higher latencies, but when I do the tracert tests they ping in the 50ms range.
Another two guys I know who play BF2 online, also from Bloem on the other side of town, didn't get affected by that internet blackout and they have their freakin low ping of 30.
NOW, the question remains, what can I do from my side to get things rectified?
a) Log another fault, at the beast's 375 375 number
Will a consultant be able to check connection routing ?
b) Go to my local beast direct shop and complain there once again. Did this twice previously, consultant did forward my complaint, till this day I haven't heard anything
It HAS to do with connection routing at my exchange. Hell isn't there a number I could call directly to have a nub look at the connection routing to fix this BS? I can play online, but holy crap, my shots doesn't register always.
Please anyone, give me advice (not sarcastic advice) as to what I can do solve this, as it is really DRIVING me up the walls! I'm sick and tired of it, and although I can download stuff locally at full line speed, my online gaming experience has really gone down the toilet the past week.
Any advice welcome,
Thanks
