Hi there,
I use a telkom unshaped 1024 line. On boulderfist (eu) I usually get around 400-600 latency. The past week I cannot get below 700. Anyone have the same problem? Also is there any advantage to going to webafrica, or are all of them roughly the same latency?

Thanks

i found that during a week/working day the latency is awful

i think its has something to do with companies and telkom line usage during the day.

further more it does imporve during the evening but it still suxzors !

The lag is killing me.

I have the 512 connection and usually (the past three or four weeks) have a latency of about 1800 - 2000. How the fck am i supposed to play with 2 seconds of lag....

I personally know someone who plays on a dial up almost every day, and his latency is around 700 - 1200. Sometimes as low as 400. I have thaught about changing to dial up... But the fact remains that my 512 adsl is twice as slow as his 56k dial up.

If you have been to the adsl section of the telkom website you may have read this
Telkom's DSL offerings are up to SPEED!

Telkom recently signed-up its 200,000th customer while moving into top gear upgrading it's DSL 192 customers as well as it's DSL 1024 customers to higher speeds without additional charges, not only did we upgrade customers' speeds, we also reduced the prices considerably.

Telkom's DSL services were voted 'The Best Broadband Service in South Africa' and that was before we reduced the price. It is now more affordable than ever to keep abreast of the latest trends, access the world of information for your child's project or surfing your favourite sites.

Can you beleive the arrogance. Voted the 'Best Broadband Service in South Africa' ???? How stupid do they think we are. It is because of this affordable-best-in-SA service that i cannot actually compete properly online. We are being shafted from every angle...

Well I'm on two accounts at the moment (Telkom 3GB, 384k shaped and OpenWeb 384k uncapped shaped)

Just testing the openweb for this month

When I play WoW with my openweb account I get latency of around 1200 - 2300. If I logout, change to telkom account my latency immediately drops to around 600-800.

Which is really a shame cause I'd much rather change from telkom but i'm too addicted to my WoW so for that reason alone I'm staying with them.

Might try out a webafrica account in the next month or two. See how that compares

My ping on iBurst sways between 450ms and about 700ms. Its usually as high as a 1000 when the game starts up but drops very quickly.

As i mentioned above my ping has been over 700 lately, but this week way above that sometimes as high as 2k. Even tried to go onto some us servers with no luck. Trying to chat to telkom about it, but you know how that goes. Also strange because it is not only the game also any internati0onal site is slow. Downloading windows update even took forever. anyone else find that as well? eg. ping with speedtest.net to paris is around 600-800ms ping.

i just took a new 1g unshapped account that uses fibreoptics and no digital satellite,WHAAM my internet surfing is like hot knife through butter but i still got the same problem with high latency,It usually starts off at like 200ms then shoots up to like 800ms in like 5 mins.

on a personall level,Telkom are at blame here,Alot more people nowadays are going for ADSL and personally i dont think telkom have the infrastructure to handle the amount of customers IMO they drowning the lines.

does anyone here know if telkom have actually changed the infrastructure and layout(cables) in the past 15 years?

They probably have'nt. I also think that they are selling more accounts than they can handle. One of the main reasons i got adsl in the first place was to play warcraft. When i signed up about a year ago my latency was around 1000ms. And its just got steadily worse.

btw. 800ms is much better than what i have at the moment. Who do you use for the fiber optic? Is it provided by telkom, i looked on telkom.co.za and cant find anything... And who is your isp? At the moment im busy changing my account type with my isp to get better international pings.
Other than that i was thinking of upgrading to the 1024 but i dont know if that will inprove my actual warcraft latency that much. And the only way i can tell for sure is to upgrade.

pheonix.net 1 gig account for a test run,My latency in the evening is like 300 ms,during the day its awfull.

Just done a fun run into MC with 10 lvl 70s,my ms was like 1300 which was like totally unplayable.

I used to have sentech 256k package (before they capped) and always had ping of 800ms-1600ms, and on their "bad" days, anything over 2000+ms. Bet you guys have never had 40000+ms (its happened on Sh*tech).

Anyways, got ADSL 384k shaped with Cybersmart, now its anywhere between 400-800ms and it "feels" faster as well, pressing a button actually does something almost right away! No more instant casts with 3 second cast time! On EU realms btw.

If I had the cash I would upgrade in an instant, must be bliss to play at 200ms, or if you have heard the pommies, like 12ms (thats why rogues own us lol).

Hi

I was playing on my folks 8 meg ADSL in Bexhill (UK) and was getting about 95ish ms, i think it peaked at like 160ms once. I play on the USA severs.

Regards,
Angus

Well if you played on the EU server the latency would have been even lower.

Its understandable for us to have higher pings than the UK.. but 800 ms :(

Are you're guys normal international pings still normal?

I'm using my Shaped account at the moment. Seems to get consistently better results then the unshaped. As per .geek's message, that's more or less where it stands. :P

Ongoing Unshaped ADSL issues

Two weeks along the line and STILL the unshaped ADSL latency sucks.
Checked with my service provider + saix notice board... no reported problems, everything is hunkey dorey with the network. Yet if you phone in and complain, they are aware of the problem, but they are all keeping it hush hush quiet.
Sickening... Is anyone actually looking at improving the unshaped adsl latency at telkom ? Where it use to be 300 - 350 MS its been on 700 - 900 MS the last 2 weeks.

Anyone using unshaped ADSL on the Verizon network that can confirm if the latency is any better on their network ?

Hmmm ok it seems if they say the problem has been resolved... thats what we will have to end up getting use to then.

Only other option is to try Verizon's unshaped ADSL packages and see how they compare latency wise with the telkom ones.

Its becoming harder and harder to play high-end content in WoW with poor latencies. Thank goodness there are no bosses in TBC that requires lightning fast reflexes with tranq chain shots.

If anyone on the forums here have an unshaped Verizon account, pls let us know how the latencies compare etc.

Thanks !
