Anyone experiencing higher latency tonight 31/10. Mine has gone from 30ms typically to 300ms. Cpt , Jhb servers. Slower download speeds, down to 2Mbps from 4Mbps.

Who do i punch in the face?:cry:

In what suburb are you?

Ever since the 3rd of October (the time during which Telkom did the 384kbps -> 1Mbps upgrades) my latency has also increased from say 13ms to about 100ms. My download speed is also often lower: 800kbps instead of 1.6Mbps on my MWEB 2Mbps uncapped.

I'm in Krigeville, Stellenbosch. Some of the other areas (like where I have friends) seem to be unaffected - like Die Boord, Mostertsdrif, near Engineering Building...

Update:
Here's a graph of my latency (in blue) to google.cinx.net.za, that includes my upload & download speeds (in red & green):

The past few days my latency has been much better than since the 3rd of Oct. I suspect the Telkom users ran out of cap or something like that.
You'll notice that even though I'm uploading/downloading nothing, my latency just suddenly went higher from 21:25 - 22:00.

Hi Pada

i'm in La Coline. We should be on same exchange (Stb central). Things looking better this morning 40ms (Afrihost 4Mbps capped) Download speeds still slow 2Mbps normaly get 3,5 to 4.

Thanks for the graph seems to confirm exact times i had issues. What do you use to generate it?

I'm using my office's Zabbix server to monitor the latency from my home server to google. I don't know if Zabbix server can run on Windows though.
My MikroTik router is exposing the network bytes sent/received via SNMP, which I then also pull in on the same graph.

If you just want to track the latency, then use SmokePing.

Same issue tonight. Dont know who to blame. Could this be after Afrihost changed from IS to MtN? Probably not! Probably telkom upgrades! Whoever decided on these upgrades, even thou they exchanges could not handle it yet should be fired, o wait its telkom, probably getting a promotion.

Suddenly this morning my latency to google.cinx.net.za is incredibly high: 180ms
So now I'm monitoring a random host on the path to google.cinx.net and now my latency actually looks pretty good so far for this morning.

I'll just have to keep monitoring throughout the rest of the day still, because it usually becomes worse after 17:00.

Here is my latency graph for today from 11:00 - 19:00:

It looked pretty good today, except for 12:45 - 15:30, where it went up to 100ms.

I can't really post anything before 10:00 in the morning and anything after 19:00, because that is when I download stuff and then my latency is completely whack in any case.

Thanks Pada, Who is your service provider?

Mine seems to be a Afrihost issue, see Afrimans post: Seems to be ok now (30ms)

The recent latency issues are not on MTN's side, they were actually due to us (afrihost).

We've allowed all users (capped and uncapped) to run pretty much unshaped since change over so that we could ensure that even in a worst case scenario we a) had enough IPC capacity (which is being upgraded anyway) and b) that the network would continue to perform under stress. While the network help up it's end, without proper shaping policies in place, we had the problems of latency and ping causing some users issues (while most were getting full performance). We should have implemented shaping and QoS yesterday, but for some reason this did not take effect in time ( I am still waiting for answers on this) and I have been assured by Gian and the other Directors that this will be in place by end of business today.

Usage spikes just after 6pm, which is when things have been going pear shaped, and it's mainly because uncapped accounts were basically performing at the level of capped accounts - no shaping, no throttle, no prioritisation. We're tweaking the uncapped accounts now to get the best overall performance, while recognising the priority of capped users who pay per GB. We're trying to give everyone the best overall experience when usage is high, and also a premium performance for uncapped users when we can afford to give them more capacity/resources.

Our network is 17 days old (in terms of being live). It takes some time to get things fine tuned for best performance. If we look back just a week, there's no doubt that performance is getting better and better for more clients as we progress. It's a journey, and we fully plan to reward clients who stick with us with better pricing and products in the future.

I'm with MWEB, but I'm experiencing the same issue with the other providers as well: WebAfrica, Afrihost & Telkom

You can easily do a test with Telkom Guest account by using the following credentials:
user: guest@telkomadsl
pass: guest
and then going to the speedtest on http://www.saix.net/

O ala mapstix , actually forgot about the Telkom guest account! thank for reminding me!
