High Latency with Fibre

Just wanted people to know that fibre may not be the option if they are gamers using international servers. In fact I would say think very hard before you let go of your working ADSL.

I live in Noordhoek, Cape Town and while the fibre line latency is great during the day (when I am at work), the high latency after 20:30 makes it impossible to play games like LOL (league of legends). I have tried to get someone to assist (twitter, phone calls and even hello peter) but so far I just get the standard response to say people are looking into it. The strange thing is that some evenings, I get a decent latency of around 200 and then day will go by with a high latency of over 650. As a clan gamer it is causing havoc with scheduled games. Where we have had to forfeit several matches due to impossible latency.

I have the 20mbps @ 50gigs data package and can only say that I am bitterly disappointed. I cancelled my working ADSL line with Axxess to upgrade to fibre only to find that I cannot continue gaming as I did in the past.

I have been tracking the latency using ping plotter which shows that the issue is connected to:
IP 196.25.39.45 wblv-ip-hsll-1-wan.telkom-ipnet.co.za which has an average ping of 398 over 10 minutes and
IP 196.43.9.50 lon-ip-dir-telecity-pos-1-1-0.telkom-ipnet.co.za which has an average ping of 661 over 10 minutes

That isn't the fiber, it's the ISP.
Try using a capped Axxess account (the 1GB free one).

Im with Telkom Fibre and I seem to get pings of about 300ms on my Xbox One speed test, I haven't tried playing any online but its quite disappointing that the speed is so good but the ping is lacking

Yes - I agree Johnatan56... I should have mentioned that. My moan is that I am paying for a package that includes data. Now I must purchase additional data on top of my Telkom package. I guess that I should just suck it up and pay! but it does feel like I am being cheated!

you do know that the X1 speed test pings a set azure server. This server can be anywhere in the world.

Even with fibre, your ping to any european server would be about 150 - 250ms, but have heard that azure servers get a bad ping, with people in europe gettting a ping of 100ms if they stay more than 150miles away

Yeah, I know it will be higher than 250ms if I check my ping on the X1, but that seems to be the minimum. It just feels like it isn't performing at the maximum potential on the fibre

Applied for the Axxess 1 gig free. Tested both on pingplotter...
Telkom = 624
Axxess = 302 (translates into 166 ping in game)

So now I am left to pay an additional R250 to replace the Telkom package. Do you think Telkom would refund me... so that I can buy my data elsewhere?

For the love of God don't sign up for Axxess, get Vox or Crystal Web.

Using Axxess data on fibre makes me want to hurl, no one should be that cruel to a fibre line.

You should ignore this comment for now.
Afrihost/Axxess have moved over to a new network, having no problems with them atm. You can always cancel on the month and go to the next ISP.

Lol....

I still have my Afrihost account as a backup and it's horse **** compared to my main Vox account. Same line, same conditions, same time and even in browsing Afrihost is slower.

As for "new network" it's just Vox with Afrihost as a middle man... And then Axxess is another middle man after that

Don't have that issue. Have a perfect 170ms latency to LoL EuW, full speed on torrents, web pages are instantly responsive and it's quite cheap.

ok - so it seems like its standard to have a few data accounts. I will test the Axxess one for a few days and then look into VOX and crystal web.

Actually my ping with Axxess is the best I have ever had - 166 is almost like a dream. Wonder if I will suddenly move up from my bronze lol status :)
