Hi guys, I have recently been experiencing high latency spikes -- one moment I have a nice 10ms ping and the next it shoots up to 500ms... What could the problem be?

First, open command prompt (start button -> cmd)
Type in "tracert webafrica.com" and hit enter
right click and select all
hit the enter key
reply to this post and right click -> paste.

EDIT: Also, please tell us your service provider as well, e.g. Mweb/Afrihost/Axxes etc.

Looks like your exchange is congested. You are at the mercy of your neighbors/telkom.

Does that mean I will have to just sit with this problem?

Oh and I forgot to mention that when my ping spikes so high, I can still download at full line speed... Is that normal?

Been reading through http://mybroadband.co.za/news/adsl/82251-how-to-test-for-adsl-exchange-congestion.html
Try out another account, see if the tracert performs better.
recommend you use
Username: guest1@telkomadsl
Password: guest1

And instead type in "tracert telkom.co.za"

EDIT: Thought you'd like something to compare it to, since I see you are on afrihost, I'm on a capped account with them:

My longer first hop is due to bad wifi connection.

You are using a 3G/LTE service, can't compare it to DSL latency. You could try using "ping telkom.co.za -t" and click ctrl-c after a minute, it will tell you your average ping and packet loss at the end.

EDIT: For 50-saint, some great tools to help you diagnose:

Thanks Zertop, very useful tools.

I notice there is a loud noise on my line -- could that be causing the high latency? Or is it definitely exchange congestion?

Could be that your filter is damaged? Disconnect all the phones and see. If you can, ask your neighbor if you can borrow his POTS.
