Given the current economic climate, would it be fair to say that certain marques are high risk from the point of view that they are not financialy viable?

Ford, GM, Chrysler are all massive companies, which have lots of other brands in their groups. And they make great cars in some instances, Focus ST, is personal favourite, but the "mother" bodies are not doing well at all, and as a consumer I feel we should start taking that into consideration when buying cars.

we would not like to end up like MG drivers would we?

I don't think much will change for current owners, the worst that possibly could happen is that your motorplan might be cancelled(wild guess). I'm scheming that there's way too many owners of these cars around the world, so there'll definitely be a company or companies to replace the failed entities(should they file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection).

I drove a Renault 9 when they pulled out of SA in the old days. Within a year the price of spares shot up and the service of the vehicle was taken over by another company. Parts had to come from France. It was a mess. I sold my vehicle as soon as I could.

Ford will be ok because we get cars from Ford Europe and not Ford USA. They operate independent of each other.

I'll steer clear of the GM, Crysler brands. Just for now at least untill the Detroit problem in the US is sorted.

When you look at sales figures every month its amazing how the french/intalian car manufactures are still up and running here. Car manufactures like Toyota and Volkswagen sell more cars in a month than the others do for the whole year. (denpending on model)

If you're unsure stick with the tried and tested in the sales charts. I'll rather wait for this whole economic storm to blow over before looking anywhere else.
