Higher education question

If a person fails 1 module out of 6 modules, can they still graduate? This is her 1st year of studying. As far as I know in the past, we had to pass each module.

Yes, you are allowed to fail and rewrite modules.

You however, have to pass a minimum number of modules per year.

You cannot pass the degree unless all modules are passed that are required.

Failing one module does however have the ability to add one additional year to your studies if a requirement for your second year if its a core module.

For example in year one you have the following modules

A1
B1
C1
D1
E1
F1

Year 2 you have the following modules

A2
G2
H2
I2
J2

Year 3 you have

A3
K3
L3

You fail A1, A1 is a requirement for A2 and A3. B1 through F1 are all standalone subjects as are G2-J2 and K3-L3. A1 is also a core annual module.

In a case like this you will essentially take 1 year longer as its a core annual module. Should it be a standalone module you can continue lose no time and just add that module the next year.

If you just failed typically a rewrite is allowed and then if you pass you pass the module but if its a really bad fail for example 30% then you will have to redo the module.

I would like to add. That majority of the subjects are prerequisites for the next year/semester subject.

I do however know a few people who manage to get concessions from the course convernor and do both pre requisite and current subject at the same time and had pass all subjects that semester.

At certain universities like UCT a supplementary exam is not guaranteed for certain subjects and I believe you had to get plus 40% to qualify to write a sup.

Yup. To write a supp exam, you need to get 40-49%.

None of that "participation" trophies and "You are all winners" 30% crap.
