Cape Town - The African National Congress will initiate disciplinary proceedings against by-election candidate, Dumezweni Ndlovu, now that it has confirmed that he is a convicted hijacker, the party said on Wednesday.
Ndlovu, 41, is standing for the party in the poll for eThekwini's ward 10, taking place on Wednesday.
It has emerged however that the former policeman served four years in jail for hijacking, armed robbery and vehicle theft.
ANC KwaZulu-Natal provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala said on Wednesday that Ndlovu had confirmed to the party that he had indeed been jailed for the offences.
The party also verified this independently.
Disciplinary process
"The ANC will now refer the matter to a disciplinary process to determine if he misled the organisation," he said.
He said Ndlovu was still listed as a candidate, but if he was elected he would be instructed to step down.
Zikalala accused the Democratic Alliance, which is also contesting the poll, of trying to "manipulate the process" by publicising Ndlovu's convictions at such a late stage.
DA police spokesperson Dianne Kohler-Barnard said on Wednesday the fact that the ANC had not withdrawn Ndlovu showed it was just as morally bankrupt as its candidate.
"What this shows is that the ANC is simply not interested in ensuring ethical and honest governance."
"This is an embarrassment to our democracy, and a complete insult to voters."
