Johannesburg - A botched hijacking has led to a deadly shoot-out under the night sky in the streets of Joburg.

Police spokesman Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng told The Star on Wednesday morning that the shoot-out in Crown Mines on Tuesday night claimed the life of one of the gunmen, while his assailant has been arrested.

It is alleged that around 7pm on Tuesday night, two men stopped under a bridge near Gold Reef City Casino, after the car they were travelling in broke down.

When they got out of the vehicle to fix it, the pair was approached by two gunmen, who attempted to hijack them.

“One of the gunmen pulled out a firearm and started shooting at them,” said Mofokeng.

In retaliation, one of the occupants also drew his firearm and a shoot-out ensued.

One of the gunmen was shot and killed and was confirmed dead at the scene.

His accomplice then attempted to flee on foot but was later found at a nearby petrol station and was arrested.

“He sustained injuries on his lower body and is under police guard in hospital,” said Mofokeng. “He was also found in possession of a toy gun.”

The occupants managed to escape with no injuries and reported the shooting to police.

“A case of murder and attempted murder has been opened and more charges are expected to be added,” said Mofokeng.

He said the gunman would appear in court when he recovers.

A case of murder? So they're charging the guy who defended himself?
 
Hopefully that's the case then. One never knows these days with this poephol of a country.
 
It's the rights a criminal has. Hopefully the SAPS/NPA will drop the charges.

Both should have died.

Firearm law states you may not point a real firearm, a replica, or disabled firearm at anyone.
It could be fatal to ascertain if someone is pointing a fake or real firearm at you, before defending yourself.

Hopefully for their sake I hope they aren't charged. Certainly sounds like they were well within their rights. Another two scumbags taken off our streets.
