Hijacker killed!

"he was a good boy"

If that is truly spoken (in other words, the speaker believes it to be true, and not that it is true), then it is a condemnation of the speaker's morals that (s)he believes criminality makes one good.
What a sad view of our society.

Im sure Jeffrey Damers mom said the same thing about her son. He was a good boy! He always did enjoy cooking and eating!

I don't think that Gavin was saying the perp deserved sympathy - he was saying that it's a cause for concern when we as a society celebrate the fact that somebody was shot to death.

Nobody's saying that the hijackers are innocent or that they did nothing wrong or that they shouldn't be punished or even that the father in the case of this story shouldn't have shot back. What Gavin IS saying (I think) is that no violent death should be celebrated with glee.

Personally, I think that the hijacker's demise is possibly a "good" thing, but it's certainly not something that a healthy society should be celebrating. That makes us just as bad as the criminals.

This whole conversation just highlight the fact that, as always, we're harping on about the symptom, and ignoring the problem.

Problem: Dude tries to hijack a car, possibly threatening the victim's life.
Symptom: Victim shoots the hijacker.

Now, if random dude pulled a gun and just shot someone for no apparent reason, that's no time to celebrate the deceased's demise. But should we feel any remorse for a hijacker getting shot? No. They are the problem. Their persisitent killing of ordinary law-abiding citizens for their cars cause people to become trigger happy in situations like these.

As far as I'm concerend hijackers should be fair game. If enough of them get shot, no-questions-asked, criminals might start to get the message that it's just not worth it.

Cash-in-transit guys especially should be shot at sight. I have long maintained that legal gun owners who happen to winess one of these atrocities while stuck in traffic, should have the right, no, the obligation, to take out a CIT-robber if they have a clean shot. I mean come on, turning the van on it's side, and burning the security guards alive in it? An we're expected to respect these people's "right to dignity" and "right to life?"

Why was an armed, flight risk, given bail?

Because obviously he is a victim who's only acting out his grievances.

I'm glad he didn't manage to hijack the person but do you really have to be happy about someone you don't know being killed?

I think it's more happy that nobody else will be a victim of his in the future.

Bleh this post is dripping in moral equivalence.

How so?

There is big a difference between not feeling remorse about the hijacker's death, and celebrating his death. I certainly don't feel a damn thing that the scum ball was shot and killed, but I also don't want to dance with joy that he was killed either.

The violent death of another human being should never be celebrated. While it may be justified, or necessary or whatever, it shouldn't be celebrated. It's quite an indictment on the degeneration of our society due to crime, that we begin rejoicing when somebody is shot to death.

So if Mad BoB was shot dead it would be wrong of Zimbabweans to celebrate his demise?

It would be a good thing for Zimbabwe and the continent if he was removed from power. It would be regrettable that he had to be murdered in order for him to leave office.

You didn't asnwer the question. ;)

There are a few select individuals on this earth that does indeed earn the prestige of having people dancing on their tombstones. If Bob got shot I will dance, nay, I will boogie like Dirk Diggler all night long!

It would be "wrong" (whatever that means - I use it here because I know you like to think of things in very black and white terms) to celebrate the fact that he was assassinated. It would not be "wrong" to celebrate the fact that Zim's people were freed from tyrannical rule.

So, as my above post implied, celebration of his removal from office is great, the fact that he had to be murdered to do so is regrettable and not worth celebrating, in my opinion.

I am still dancing for joy that another scum bag piece of **** is no longer amongst us.

/me forms a congo line - and "morality" be damned

Assasination wouldn't even be balancing the scales..

I'd prefer to throw him into an angry mob. Let them deal with him. One thing is for sure, he must pay for his sins. Only one punishmit fit his crimes - a slow painful death.

It would be "wrong"

Just because he is 'human'. Well IMO just because somebody is 'human' as in Hominidae ie walks upright, articulate speech, superior intelligence or whatever doesn't by default give him some kind of special status that makes it wrong to celebrate his demise.

For example the other night a Mozzie was biting me and keeping me awake. Once I killed the bastard I celebrated his demise. Now mad BoB is IMO is worth far less than the above mentioned mozzie. The fact he is 'human' ie. walks on two feet..... is irrelevant to me. I base my views on him by his actions not his anatomical make up. So forgive me while I jive on his grave with a (hopefully) hot Zimbabwean chick :D
