Hi Everyone.

Lately my HikVision DVR (DS-7108HGHI-F1) is not sending out any emails anymore. I have not changed any settings, but I have tried changing the email address and SMTP settings, yet it still shows an error "Test Failed". I have changed it from a gmail address to another email, and I still get the same problem. The reason I tried changing from gmail was because of some new security thing in gmail that gave HikVision issues with sending emails. (I read that while trying to research what the problem could be). Any ideas of what the problem could be?

Thanks Daruk. The firmware is all up to date. Did a bit more research, had to create an "APP Password" from Google Account Settings, and use that password instead of the Google Login Password on the email setup. Seems to be working now.

I am going to leave this up, in case other people have any issues like this.

I dont even l let my cameras connect to the internet. Dunno why, but it creeps me out.

I have them all blocked off. They only talk to the VMS software, and that can see the internet for remote access. I trust the VMS more than I do the cheap Chinese cams. Not saying its the right way, just the way I do it.

Not really. You don't need a password when there's a built in backdoor.
I didn't say it was bulletproof - Just that for most cases it is enough. In today's age with technology you are being monitored in multiple ways, whether you like it or not so your camera back door isn't the be all and end all of your privacy. You carry a mobile camera on you all day...

Well more than 50% of security cameras out there have known security backdoors. It's not even the camera part that's the major issue, it's the fact that it's a device on the inside of your LAN that has it's own OS and a plethora of tools available to anyone wanting to exploit them. That's definitely not the case with the average phone, particularly if it's a (non-chinese) branded one. Ideally you want to seggregate them and create a VLAN for your cameras (and other IoT devices).
Whether it's Chinese or not is a complete farce, quite frankly. They all have back doors and/or entry points that can be exploited.
Completely agree with you about using VLAN's though. Definitely a good idea.

Hardly a farce. The Chinese are known offenders.
Dahua, Hikvision, Xiongmai - more than half of the cameras out there today.

I'm happy to explore the non-chinese cameras with backdoors to see the numbers and if they come close.
I think I wasn't clear - The Chinese are definitely the biggest contributors here. All I'm saying is that there are plenty of non Chinese tech companies doing the same thing. You don't think the Israeli's and Americans are spying on you too? The Russians... They all do it...

Nice - that must be a new feature from Google. Allows you to use older insecure apps while not storing the main account PW. Very helpful!
It's just 2FA from Google. It's not a new feature. You use 'app passwords' if you have 2FA enabled.

Sure, you pick your poison. Personally I'm more concerned with the People's Republic spreading their brand of politics than the Israelis and Americans... the Russians I would put in the same class as the Chinese... I know that's not shared by everyone.
I think the major factor though is that the majority of all cameras out there are manufactured by those three manufacturers.
Indeed, I cannot argue with that.
