I currently have this Hikvision DVR DS-7208HQHI-K1

All 8 channels are being used -analogue cameras

Should I upgrade from this? Is DVR better than NVR?

Can I use a small monitor like7/12 inch monitor to display my CCTV system in my kitchen? What specs should I look for ?

The DVR is currently connected via VGA to my main TV in the living room.

Tried to get find a wireless way to display the cctv on a bedroom TV but no luck. Wanted to avoid using cables to the other TV's

Suggestions welcome

  • Another thing I noticed that one of my cameras wont display the on screen menu - it used to do it but has stopped. I would usually go into the PTZ controls, Iris and the menu will pop up on the camera screen but now it wont. any idea why or how to fix it?

I have found, over my 15yrs +- of dabbling in my own CCTV systems, that all the CCTV DVR's/NVR's are all crap and Chinese crap with basically the same hardware and software.

I do say NVR with cat 6 and POE is best for me.

Get a Synology NAS with Synology Surveillance Centre. The best NVR you'll ever use and it supports almost every decent IP camera out there worth supporting. In fact any IP camera that implements the ONVIF protocol will work.

Piggy back off this thread... Hikvision motion detection is driving me nuts!
On the NVR, I've tried drawing a smaller area to monitor, hit apply and I can see the new detection area.

Am I missing a step? Because it's still using the full frame for detection.

That's why I gave up on Hikvision went for Reolink with their AI detection. No more false alerts.

I have come to the same conclusion. I now run a hardware NVR for constant recording and viewing on a monitor, and Frigate to do all my Ai detection and motion recordings. The NVR just serves as a backup recording and is continuous in case Frigate missed something.

I've looked at Synology and their surveillance center, but that is in a completely different price range

Interesting, tell us more about your Frigate setup. Are you using Home Assistant as well?
