So, as anyone else experienced this?

I'm about to get insurance on my car for the first time. 2007 Citi Golf. And about 6 months ago, I checked Hippo for quotes, and there was a great deal, for 3rd Party Fire & Theft, Standard Bank came up tops with a quote of somewhere around R180pm and the rest of the quotes where unnder R250

I checked now, and the cheapest was Regent at R245 ranging up to R350

My, details are the same? What gives?

A colleague did the same this week and phoning Santam direct was R100 cheaper than the Hippo offers.

Hippo is a front ... Lots of brands, all the same company. Use a broker

Skip the broker. Phone the insurance companies directly. Outsurance would be my first suggestion. Even if they are not the cheapest, you can still walk away with R800.

You can't go direct to some of our best insurers afaik e.g. Santam only deals with brokers?

Now moving onto my 4th car and Santam has beaten Outsurance every single time in my experience and they handle claims supremely well fwiw.

Well, then I am not with one of SA's best insurers. Claims at both mine also handled supremely well.:D

+1 I phoned Santam directly and got a quote way cheaper than what Outsurance offered. Outsurance wanted R1400 pm and my current premium with Santam is R800 for full comprehensive cover including home contents. I don't think that is a bad premium for someone who's 23 years old. My old man has been with them for years and we have not had a single hassle with them before.

Agreeing to the statement he made when saying they beat Outsurance every single time and they handle claims extremely well

I left the door open for other companies on purpose when I said "some of our best", I have no specific qualms with Outsurance, just never accepted their quotes.

Telesure on the other hand I will actively avoid and advise against, and you can phone all of their "different" brands directly ;)

Nope... broker will almost always be able to negotiate a better rate.
