The LCD42W48P model is on sale at Hifi Corp for R7,499.
Here (PDF) are the specifications.

I primarily want an HD LCD for gaming purposes, but am on a small budget. The 32" units (Samsung 32" is R5,999 at Game) are in my price range (R7,499 is already pushing it to the max), but I don't think that I could live with a small set like that. I could live with a 37"/40", and the Samsung/Sony alternatives do offer full HD 40" for about R9,999, and 37" for 8599 (Samsung, Makro). However for what I would save, I could get a Philips Blu-ray player for R1,899 (Makro) for free.

It seems (according to above specs) like it uses an older generation LG LCD panel. What I like most about it is that the contrast ration is 8,000:1, which is a lot more than the Sinotec units, which are 1,500-2,000:1. The more expensive units of course have much more, like 33,000-70,000:1. Is the contrast ratio a serious factor or do you believe that its all a marketing ploy?

Does anyone have any experiences that they can share with this unit or the HiSense brand in general? Please give your advice.

they had a little stand in sandton city the other day. Guy there selling it straight from hisense for good prices. 3999 for 32" full hd, 42" full hd lcd for 6999 or was it 7999... not sure anymore.. but good prices in any case.

The quality of the displays at 1080p shown there through blue-ray they had connected there was STUNNING. I was sold (althoug my bank stated insufficient funds :P ) hehe

Sony is bringing out a new range in the next month or two, so I expect there to be some nice bargains coming on the old range. The price of a 40" full HD sony has been as low as R8400... You just have to hunt these bargains. I would not go for a cheap brand LCD. Sinotech and Hisense is not worth it IMO.

not sure about HiSense but I would not go for a sinotec at the moment, it seems they have lowered their quality...

@PottasR - when?
