Hi All,

Can anyone advise what to do in the case of someone hitting your vehicle and fleeing, tried getting details from the driver he refused and drove off.

Did get a picture of the car with the plate although.

My take is to report to the police get a case number, let insurance know and send through details and let it go on from there?

insurance must sort it out, but interested if they got photos on a camera somewhere, proving its a hit and run
or from a nearby business/home ect...

I am sure insurance will probably try and find that, did happen at a red robot and got hit from the back.

That's the best you can do. Just file a report within 48 hours.

Given that its was a hit and run, its lucky you got a photo

Unfortunately for hit and run you have to go into the station to get a case number. Had it happen recently to me. I did not get a photo and the camera poles in the intersection did not work so despite having some video footage from my dash cam it unfortunately did not show the license plate. Insurance just has to sort it out.

You have to report any accident where there is damage or injury, regardless of insurance.

Wait until you try report an accident that happened on private property... things get fun and interesting at that point... Insurance demands an AR number, and SAPS are like "Not a fscking chance it was on private property so nope"

eNatis has an online accident reporting form, I believe it gives you a ref/case number for insurance purposes, providing no-one was injured. I have never used this service, but a fried did, for a minor fender-bender. I see if you select "hit and run", it won't allow you to proceed.

1. This submission of a crash report will be legally binding.

2. All crashes must be reported within 24 hours or the next working day. (Non-Working days Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays)

3. The system will provide the user with an automatically generated Crash Report Number (CRN) for insurance claims.

4. The system will only allow for the reporting of minor damage crashes.

5. Crashes which include a person or persons being injured, killed or involved in a hit and run accident/crash must be reported immediately to the nearest Municipal/Metro Police, Traffic Department (MMT) office or South African Police Service (SAPS) station.

6. All crashes involving 5 or more vehicles must be reported at your nearest South African Police Services (SAPS).

7. The information submitted by you can be made available to your insurance service provider.

8. The reporting of the crash service is free. RTMC reserves the right to charge entities or persons to access the data at a later stage.

AFAIK you have to get a case number for any insurance claim if I'm not mistaken.
Yes, but if there were no injuries and no one fled the scene you can get that online. If there was someone injured or a hit and run you have to go into the actual station.

Hand it over to insurance and let them do the work, that's what you pay them for.

Just think of it this way, unless you have dashcam video footage of the vehicle hitting your car (with licence plate visible etc) then you are wasting your time. Why?

Imagine I crash my car and then randomly take a photo of another car to cover my ass, I tell my insurance company this car damaged mine...

Just think about the above for a second... insurance companies probably won't even bother unless it's substantial damage, not worth their time / money for a few grand.

Will insurance companies do anything if you only have 3rd Party Fire & Theft?

Gonna be difficult. Unless the your dashcam actually shows the vehicle hitting you and clear plate of the offender.
