HIV-free SANDF 'impossible'

1/4 of a war is lost already.
Sick people also take up more resources. I suppose twice as much would be realistic. I would estimate even more.

Expecting an HIV free SANDF is the same as expecting an HIV free SA society. It won't happen unless mindsets and policies change.
This is merely a result of mixed messages and flawed policy. Even the so called president in waiting could not prevent himself from indulging in unprotected sex with an HIV positive person.

There was some story a few weeks back about a bunch of army medics being completely juiced on hormones & being terribly horny. I guess that one way of coping with it.

Heard that at some of the bases 12% of the people are combat ready. Doesn't stress me though. I doubt Mauritius is gonna invade SA.

I reckon the dude is right about the "impossible" part since they are not allowed to discriminate against HIV+ people. They could reduce the prevalence dramatically though.

Sad seen as that the SA army was once a mean well trained and equiped fighting machine.

when you are not at war that generally happens, besides SA today has other priorities and can not really afford to maintain it's fighting forces at a similar state of readiness like pre '94.
Makes the arms deal acquisitions even more baffling.

IMO they should use SANDF members to beef up crime fighting in SA. Deploy troops with police when doing raids and road blocks etc. They are in the bases humping each other because they are bored, make them work!

When I left the SANDF in '96 there were reports that upwards of 70% of all the new inductees from the former banana republics that were amalgamating into the armed forces were HIV+ and that was excluding all the current SADF personnel.

I would hate to see the 'correct' stats for '08 because I think it must be way more than 23%.

Was no way I was going to stay an ops medic in that environment.

Imo they should find a way to turn HIV positive humans into biodiesel.

Would anyone consider going if called back? I would flatly refuse.
