Aids organisations on Thursday criticised Fifa and the Local Organising Committee for "blocking" attempts to make condoms and HIV-related information available at World Cup stadiums and fan parks.

"To date Fifa has not permitted any civil society organisation to distribute HIV or health-related information and Fifa has not provided any written confirmation that condoms may be distributed at stadiums and within the fan festivals," they said in a statement.

They had requested an urgent meeting with the soccer body and the LOC, but were turned down.

The statement was issued by the Aids Consortium, the Community Media Trust, John Hopkins Health and Education in South Africa, the National Religious Association for Social Development, the South African HIV Clinicians Society, Section 27, Sonke Gender Justice Network, Soul City and the Treatment Action Campaign. It was endorsed by South African National Aids Council (Sanac) chairperson Mark Heywood.

The group believed Fifa had a "moral obligation" to team up with local organisations to protect citizens and visitors from HIV, tuberculosis and the H1N1 virus.

It wanted Fifa to tell the public whether it had approved the distribution of condoms and health information at stadiums and fan parks, and whether this approval extended to Sanac's civil society affiliates.

It also wanted to know whether HIV testing and condoms would be endorsed by Fifa and the LOC during the World Cup, for the sake of "millions of people" who would be watching.

LOC spokesperson Rich Mkhondo could not immediately be reached for comment. - Sapa

Mr Achmat and his clan of HIV activist are really just a bunch of opportunist, what do they think is going to happen at the football games? Orgies? There ANC struggle roots never seem to be in check. This blatant opportunist strategies had it's place when our government was run by the likes of Mr. Mbeki & our Beetroot minister of health. Since then a new era of awareness in the health sector has arrived. Our President the Honorable Mr. Jacob Zuma (respect the office) has publicly taken a HIV test and announced his results.

There really is NO place for these stupid antics at the Biggest Spectacle ever to reach our shore. Feel it? It is here :D

Respect the office? He is the one making a mockery of office with his squashed corruption charges and poking everything in a skirt - so why? He's an oaf.

I don't get this whole thing about treating HIV and aids as just another disease. I mean some people are born with diabetes and other conditions, which they don't have any control over but there is no free treatment. However the TAC is fighting this huge battle for free ARV's , for people who made their own bad choices. Why doesn't everybody who doesn't have aids then get the equivalent ARV cost back in cash each month.

NB: this is only aimed at people who went screwing around without any worries - not any anybody who was accidentally infected or attacked, the kids who were born with it.

Yes, be responsible and keep your d**k in your pants and dont screw around. AIDS would go away if people returned to be morally sound.

There is nothing immoral about sex IMO. Sleeping around is unhealthy yes but I don't see how it is immoral.

I don't see why condoms shouldn't be distributed at the SWC2010. It is a problem that we need to acknowledge and honestly I would prefer tourists were aware of the problem and as a result take precautions to prevent infection rather than the alternative.

LOL! I'm not a prude by a long shot, but I get the distinct feeling the swc is more about sex than it is about soccer :D

+10 Away from the wife and the ball and chain, different flavours to be had.

This is good. Aids is the world over and we do have one of the highest infection rate. So rather safe than sorry.

+1 hopefully they have some in the Presidential Suite as well...

I don't see anything wrong with making condoms available at stadiums and maybe a poster in a hallway or entrance. whats wrong with that?
