Exactly. They only have to wire fibre to one building to serve a thousand people. Less infrastructure is required for more people at faster speeds, therefore it is cheaper.

The US hosts the most commonly accessed content in the world, so they don't have to pay for overpriced data from undersea cable providers. A better comparison would be Australia. Their internet is very similar to ours.
