I know that posts have been made about this before, but I was unable to find a solution.
I have an iBurst USB wireless modem (iBurst_Terminal_v325 driver) and cannot connect to the Steam network to log into my steam account. It keeps telling me that it could not connect to the steam network and that there may be an issue with my internet connection. i have great signal quality on iburst ( 80% + )
The network test on steampowered doesnt work either.

I'm using Zonelabs firewall ( no xp firewall enabled) steam is allowed all udp/tcp traffic in and out.
Steam wont connect even if i disable my firewall
I dont have a problem with any other programs or internet access.
My computer freezes up when i open up the steam client. If i run a ping to www.iburst.co.za and open steam, the ping just stops or times out,but once steam closes, the ping continues.
I dont want to have to update steam via dial up all the time, which works by the way.
thanks

Steam has the option to work without being connected to the internet, if that also doesnt work it may be an install issue or perhaps defrag of the drive may help. I assume you are running XP as I had issues with it when on lose98

the problem isnt playing offline, that I can do.
It's updating the steam client or HL2.
I cannot log into the online steam account with iburst. So I cant check for updates etc.
yeah i'm using Xp sp2. I've had HL2 for almost 2 years, but since re-installing and having Iburst, i'm just having problems getting it all updated.
It updates etc fine on dial up, but i dont have iburst so i can sit on dial up and download tens of megs of game content or updates....
it's a bugger......

ok this may sound silly , but how do i use an ethernet cable if the wireless modem is usb only?
do iburst have an ethernet wireless modem?

I know the new black UTD also uses both USB and ethernet

Why does that make a difference?

i have no idea, wuz something that also freaked me out. cuz for a long while i couldnt figure it out and then for fun i thought let me try an ethernet cable and it worked to log in. for some reason steam can do it's updates just not log in when using usb, yet some people have managed which makes it weirder.

so in your opinion is this steam log in problem an issue with the steam client or the usb modem, or just a combo of the two.
'cause clearly it seems people with the ethernet flavoured modem have no problems.....

i think the problem lies with the steam problem because when i did use USB instead of ethernet with other internet apps ect i never experienced any problems. also reading the steam powered forums and australian iburst forums i came to the conclusion there was no fix but to use an ethernet cable.

also guys who used half life on a mac never experienced the no log in with steam which says it must be a USB/Software/PC Steam Client issue.

also installing iburst with an ethernet cable is 1 2 3.
