Howzit!

So I have wanted to get a proper train set, from the likes of Hornby or Lima etc, for ages, since I was a kid. Thought to myself to check it out, as my son is reaching close to his teens...thought he would enjoy it. Searched for a starter set and OMG...the prices! I had no idea it was so expensive. A small oval starter Hornby train set will set you back R2500...yowzers. Looked for a 2nd hand one, not much out there.

Anyone here that has this as a hobby and some advice how best to get into it as a starter and noob? Didnt think the prices would be to expensive, so any tips appreciated

Sad that Lima went the way of the dodo. If I knew that I would have kept all my models in good condition.

Don't know the prices but we have one where smoke comes out, anyone know if that's safe? Its made in China

Maybe best to get hold of a club that can guide.

Then again rather try these:

Or

i started collecting some train stuff about 10 years ago but dont have enough to complete a full train set on tracks.
Will post on here later in time what i have still sealed in boxes.
Its not much, probably a shoe box or 2 of stuff
size i went for is HO

I have a huge box with my train set that was gifted to me as a kid, this post made me think of it

No idea what brand etc it is

Will take it out this weekend and dust it off

As far as I remember it needed a new controller, the old one was left on and the case melted off lol

Unopened? How TF you have that much self control??? :D
My dad bought my brother and myself a set each when we were quite young. I think he forgot about this set and I got it when I was well into my 20's. I think it may end up being quite valuable some day.

Yeah, seems HO is the most popular.

Shoo, probably is worht a fair bit now

Saw this and think it would look great as a model train

I got this one a while ago:
Great fun. Play with it daily. Trains connect to your phone via BT and can control forward/reverse / speed / lights / horn.

Friend used to have one that filled an entire room years ago. Literally entire thing just a big landscape. Snow, mountains you name it. Was insane.
