Hi!

Did anyone buy from Hobby King (http://www.hobbyking.com) online. Their brushless motors and other electronics are much cheaper, even with shipping included in the price , than the ones found in SA stores . I would like to know if anyone had problems with them in terms of shipping and getting the products over to SA.

Thanks :)

Yip, ive ordered some stuff for my customers and myself with them - their service is top notch. Both them and Tower Hobbies have excellent service! As far as a I know Hobby King is one of the biggest online stores in the US for hobby related goodies, and their prices are really good.

Remember though, when bringing the stuff in - sars charge VAT at 110% to your total bill. No duties though.

I will give them a try, but 110% VAT charge is a lot!!!

I am building an autonomous quadcopter so needed a good source of brushless motors and electronics.

Thanks!

A bit of a mis understanding on your side...

They take product value, ie R100 x 110% = R110 x0.14= VAT on your R100 item.

I'm about to click BUY NOW on an order. Fedex Priority is $92 whereas "Express Mail Service to South Africa" is $29. I'm not in a particular rush so I could use the considerable saving by going the cheaper route. Has anyone used the cheaper option before? Is it safe or should I just cough for the Fedex route (bearing in mind it is more than the cost of my actual order).

I have placed about 15 orders from Hobby King in the last couple of years using the standard shipping and never had an issue. They did have issues last year with shipping LiPo batteries, so rather exclude them from your order if any.

Hey, thanks for the reply! I'll definitely go with the cheaper option then. Unfortunately, the batteries in my order probably represent the biggest saving vs. buying locally, so I'm very tempted to just chance it. Incidentally, the full description of the shipping is
"Express Mail Service to SOUTH AFRICA (Lipo) 500g - 999g".

Think that means they resolved their issues?

I have not ordered batteries from them since before the issues started so can’t say for sure.

Try splitting the order, place the batteries in one order and the rest in another, if there are issues then you just don’t get the batteries. You will probably find the cost of shipping the other goods will be a lot less without the batteries.

Also batteries like the Turnigy nano-tech are available locally at decent prices.

Great, thanks so much for the advice...

LiPo are restricted on most/all airlines, so if you want to he hassle-free, don't order them.

Rather get them locally, where someone else had had the headache of importing via sea freight.

Anyone needing prototype manufacturing done let me know via PM and I'll see if we can assist.

We can also laser cut and 3D print....
