Pretoria - The owner of News Café in Centurion has been forced to close down after almost 20 years as a result of slow business linked to the unrepaired sinkhole on the corner of Jean Avenue and Gerhard Street.

Gerry Kanaris had been trading near the intersection where the massive sinkhole appeared in May, causing major inconvenience in the neighbourhood.

The area and roads leading to it were closed as part of a traffic management plan.

Traffic was then rerouted via a nearby petrol service station, while most motorists preferred to completely avoid the affected area.

Business people in the area previously expressed worries that they may have to close down because of delays by the City in fixing the hole.

In May, Kanaris was the first to indicate the possibility of closing shop and workers losing their jobs if the City did not urgently repair the dangerous sinkhole.

At the time, he said the street closures had adversely affected his business, located at a nearby shopping complex.

He had employed about 200 people.

Kanaris said reality had now hit home, and he was forced to break the sad news to his employees that they no longer had jobs as he had lost 90% of his business.

He said he would remain closed until the City had fixed the sinkhole.

Kanaris said at least 30 families of workers would be affected by his decision to close the business.

“I will remain closed for as long as they don’t fix the sinkhole.

“Profits have gone down by 90% because of the sinkhole and resultant road closures,” he said.

Kanaris said he had since asked his legal representatives to sue the City for neglect of municipal duties.

George Vurgarellis, who owns Mimmos restaurant in the vicinity, said he too was worried that he might have to close shop if there was no solution soon.

“We have not cut jobs as yet and are trying to hold on for our dear lives. The guys have also been here for many years; you cannot just say say to them ‘sorry go home there’s no more job’.

Does he employ 6.5 persons per family?

I think he meant he has employed over 200 people over the years but 200 people over 20 years is not a lot of people especially for a restaurant, people usually come and go.
 
It's not just businesses, the re-routing of traffic is a major inconvenience. Come-on Centurion, off the arses and do something like we pay you to do mkay..
 
The one at King Shaka airport in Durban closed more than a year ago already and no sink hole to blame there

+1 This sinkhole is a series which was first discovered when the Lyttelton Manor High School suddenly lost their swimming pool (circa 1977/8). Then the shopping centre on the corner of Selborne and Cantonments road had to be demolished and rebuilt (circa 1995). Then around 1999 the Lyttelton SAPS (300m up the road from NewsCafe) suddenly had extensive dolomite management done at the station (drainage and water channels). The SAPS also wanted to build more offices on the ground to the north of their barracks, but were refused permission by the geologists who during 2000 discovered a sinkhole so deep that none of their equipment was able to measure where it ended. That's the reason why one can see so many temporary aluminum offices on the grounds.

News Cafe is dive, patronised only by ANC / EFF type supporters. The shift in its focus to give preference to rude, loud and obnoxious young black BMW, Audi and Aston Martin convertible driving tenderpreneurs came during 2003/4 and has continued. Profits have consistently plunged and the Centurion branch in particular, is a ****hole that attracted the worst of the worst.

This particular sinkhole needs to do its job, please keep falling. I will not miss Centurion NewsCafe when it plunges into the deepest and darkest bowels of the earth, and I can only hope that it takes the vast majority of its preferred patrons with it.

Can't fault you here. Only been there once, and that was enough. Would be sad if the same happened to Crawdaddys though. Then again, you don't go to Crawdaddys to pose with your car, so those looking for a goof meal will still go.

So the loss of jobs is acceptable because the establishment caters to alleged Tenderpreneurs and rich, black folk? Hate to break it to you. Any place that has alcohol and young people is going to be loud.

Feel for these business owners. Digging out of that situation must be very difficult.

They should have sold off long ago, like the others. News Cafe is KACK. I've been to the Centurion one only once, it was SCHIT.

EDIT: That being said, it's a shame that it still hasn't been repaired :eek:

But News Cafe isn't the only business in the area that is suffering. The council should pull it's finger out of their bum and do what they charge rates and taxes for.

Yeah I agree, I purely meant News Cafe was schit. Two or three here in CT closed down LONG ago.

While I feel sorry for any small business owner, I have to agree that this particular News Cafe is barking up the wrong tree looking for sympathy from Centurion's residents.

The bureaucracy in fixing this hole (budget allocations, etc) has been long winded and that is not on. That being said, I believe that due to the dolomite, some tests and activities that cannot be rushed needed to be done prior to starting with it.

I am a bit worried, as I have spotted a new gaping axewound opposite momentum, three blocks away from this. If that intersection closes down, I cannot even imagine what traffic will be like in Centurion...
 
Sinkhole drama: Tshwane faces R100m suit over Jean Avenue delays




Pretoria - The City of Tshwane may face a R100 million lawsuit because of delays in repairing the massive sinkhole on the corner of Gerhard Street and Jean Avenue in Centurion.

In addition, in terms of the agreement reached in the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, yesterday, work on the sinkhole has to start today and be completed within six months.

The City will also take urgent steps to ensure that the intersection is safeguarded and public protected from harm. It was further agreed the City would erect clearly visible street signs to warn the public of the dangerous sinkhole.

Furthermore, on a monthly basis the City must provide the applicants and the registrar of the court with a progress report pertaining to the works that had been done during the previous month.

The matter had been brought against the City by a company called Marndre Beleggings CC and a body of persons affected by the sinkhole. Respondents included City manager Dr Moeketsi Mosola and Lorato Kegakilwe-Piki, executive director for transport infrastructure, design, construction and maintenance at the City’s Roads and Transport Department.
