Hi there. So I need to get a new passport as mine has expired and I've changed my surname subsequently. I then realised I must have lost my ID book during my move in December. So now I have two problems because I can't get a passport without an ID book and I don't know which documents I need to get a new ID book. More specifically, what documents can I use to prove I'm me? I've got a certified copy of my ID book and I've got my drivers license. Do you think they will accept these forms of identification to apply for a new ID book? I'm worried about trying with my birth certificate, if my mom even still has it, because it has my maiden name on it and not my married name.

Any help would be appreciated.
Sam

You can apply for a replacement by:

Completing Form BI-9 as well if you have not previously submitted your fingerprints
Attaching additional documents as required (e.g. a marriage certificate if you are married)
Paying the required fee for the re-issue

In the event you lose, damage or have your ID book stolen, you may request a Temporary Identification Certificate (TIC). This can be done at any office of the Department of Home Affairs and is subject to the verification of your fingerprints.

If you have a marriage certificate you can also take that.

Had the same problem had my ID and passport stolen, just did an affidavit from the police then I was good to go. With the new system from Home Affairs you don't need to fill in any paper work, nor do you need any photo's it's all done by them. Good luck by the way I only waited four days for both my ID and passport to arrive.

That's good to know! Thanks for replying, I really appreciate it. Which home affairs office did you go to, just for interest sake. I think the closest one to me is either Sandton or Randburg.

I've been to the Randburg one recently for passport related stuff, couple times, not too bad an experience. They open at 8, ID and Passport queue all the same, took two hours in total - there just before 8, left before 10. That was in the week though.
