So how come for 7 hours today I have been averaging 180MB/hr UPLOAD??

If my maths is correct (and it has been known to fail) 180MB/hr*8 = 1440Mb/hr. Divide by 3600 seconds = 400kbps! {edit for those who want to state the obvious: It's close enough, lets just assume 1000kb = 1Mb okay?[/i]}

Normally this wouldn't be a problem, it's just that I decided to get some files today thru P2P ('cos my cap hasn't really been used this month) and now find that I've given away over 1GB in uploads!!

If anyone has an answer to this one, please let me know. Do you think I can dispute it with Telkom?

Here are my BW logs if you're interested:

UPDATE: Just did an upload speed test to Sentech's speed test...results below:

Speed Test
Your upload speed is: 50.19 KBps, or 401.5 Kbps
The test took 16 seconds to complete

hmmm. Is it just me or is something screwy?

edit: just for laffs, here is the download result:

Speed Test
Your download speed is: 38.63 KBps, or 309.03 Kbps
The test took 54.157 seconds to complete[:(]

Home 384 and 512 are effectively symmetric what ever Telkom marketing says ...

well, not quite: my uploads are 25% faster than downloads....:(

edit: ****, I told you my maths was bad. Uploads are 33% faster than downloads!

I've noticed my CS:S pings on Saix servers are usually around 41ms to 50ms and there's others with 31ms to 40ms - I would guess they are on ADSL 512 ?

Personally, for the cost saving, I think 384 is definately the best bet.

Haven't noticed much about upload speeds as the files I upload are usually no bigger than 100k as it's just code or images.

Assuming there is no other activity on the line, 384 pings will be identical to 512 pings.

The differences you have noticed are easily explained by differeces in location, PC hardware, router / modem type etc.

I've done close on 60 gigs (up & down) in this, my first full month with DSL384. :P And yes, latency is the same (assuming all outside factors are equal) between 384 and 512. I have 512 at work, and I've compared them.

this may make you feel even better

Thanks hArTh, the more I think about the 384 decision, the better I feel ! :D

bb_matt,

I just got capped (thanks to the 1.3 GB of uploads yesterday), and my international speed is STILL faster than Sentech Mycareless 128 was! :)

I've heard from other ppl that capped ADSL international speeds are quite good all of a sudden. I dont know why but dont expect it too last ...

I found that on my 512k ADSL which is supposed to have 256k upload, that when using Torrents I can upload even over 50kb/s, when I am supposed to be limited to 25kb/s. Often I will look in BitComet and will see I'm uploading at 60kb/s. This doesn't seem to apply when uploading to a single person/connection which seems to limit off at 30kb/s. But when uploading to multiple people I can easily get a TOTAL of 60kb/s upstream.

Regarding the cap, everynow and then a few days or hours will crop up when it seems the cap has dissapeared and int. speeds are normal, don't be fooled , this never really lasts too long. The longest period I know of was when a couple of ADSL users which were capped on the 1st of a month (including myself) made it up until the 5th of that month without feeling the burn of the cap.

hmmm....well it didn't last: international speed is zero now.

Now, should I buy another account for just 3 days???:(
