Home internet - 3g vs ADSL

Hi guys,

Ok so I am finally taking the step of getting internet at home. Up until now my work internet was more than enough, but our IT department has gotten something up their behinds, and now we are restricted to surfing only and only at certain times....

I am not really one for downloading blu-ray rip movies etc, but would like to download the occasional series episodes or so. What deals for under R300pm would you recommend? I don't have an ADSL line at my home, and so don't want to pay an arm and a leg to get it installed, but I know that Telkom had that 3 month trial thingy where installation was free, but don't see it on their website anymore... Had a look at 8ta, but coverage not that great where I'm staying.

Any suggestions would be GREAT!!! Thanks a million!!
 
If money is an issue, then don't go 3G. The cheapest you'll get away with is about R500-R600 for a 1mbps uncapped line (this is including line rental + ADSL rental and R199 uncapped from MWEB which I'll always recommend)
 
oh, and considering how much crap people do online during the day and the limited resources of a company to do simple stuff like email/business critical stuff online, you'd understand why you're limited now. No one but you put that "something" up I.T's ass, because I.T works on an ever diminishing budget because business STILL thinks that I.T is a waste of money....

Yea I guess ur right hey. Some people MURDER their work's internet at the expense of those who actually need it for work.

I just saw this deal:

A 1mb uncapped with all incl for R300 doesnt look that bad. That speed will suit me, as I dont really download big files.

Any thoughts?

You still need to pay Telkom for the phone line rental, at R150 or so, P/M - so, that makes total cost R450, PM. Which you just cannot beat / compare from a 3G service.

1Mb should be more than enough if you're not a heavy downloader.

This is where Firewalls, terms of internet use and written warnings should be used.
Every week I pull reports on what the users are doing during the week.
They have signed documents to agree to a fair use of the Businesses internet for private use.
We don't restrict or block internet usage besides porn etc. if they are found abusing the privileges we have given them we either restrict their usage or we slap them with written warnings. The users are happier and so are we.

As for getting ADSL, don't expect the installation to be anytime soon. Expect a few weeks/months for installation.
 
3G HSPA+ broadband speeds is faster

Have never had the need to use ADSL as the current price cuts on 3G data via the various promotional bundles from service providers such as 8ta/Telkom Mobile and CellC has literally made ADSL the laughing stock of any broadband connection IMO where speed is concerned. My 3G connection is way faster than any of the cheaper uncapped ADSL broadband connections on offer. Also it helps to know a bit about how to properly make use of a 3G internet broadband connection to get maximum speeds, like investing in a good 21.6Mbps HSPA 3G modem together with CellC's 900MHz HSPA+ network. :whistle:

If however you plan on downloading lots of data from the internet, and the speed or quality of the broadband connection does not matter, then of course go for the ADSL installation and continue supporting the SA Government baby called "Telkom" by paying their mandatory monthly voice line rental as well as ADSL line rental fees. :sick:

For 2.5 years I was very happy with my Cell C 3G as well as a bit of MTN 3G. For the last 2 months it has become unbearable. Cell C is now impossible to use between 18:00 and 22:00 daily. The MTN signal is too weak to be reliable. Even with a LPDA antennae.
Ordered my Telkom simple for R399pm. First connect yesterday and now I am happy. ;) Yes, it costs more, but then it is more stable. I also don't have the wife screaming down my neck: "What is wrong with this internet of you?!!"

Hahahaha!! @Nephew I hear you bro! My wife also loves the internet, but if it's off and she can't do her PINTEREST duties, then he HATES it...

I did borrow my one friend's 3g stick, and plugged it in to the 3g/adsl router I bought, and got about 4.7mb speed on speedtest.net during 1pm this week, so it's not bad. I got 2.1mb speed with my iphone on Vodacom, at the same time, same place, so it's actually faster than my vodacom. So I think I MIGHT be going for the 8ta 10gig+10gig, but am just concidering if I want to do another 24month contract... choices choices!!!
 
If you go on 3G, please check your signal coverage in your area before diving into any data contracts..
People seem to fail hard for not doing their homework properly.

Thanks for sharing this positive experience. I would really also like to switch to ADSL broadband for the fact that I am getting frustrated with the very limited amount of data on all 3G offerings compared to what you can get from ADSL. Congestion however is not something I would like and proximity to an exchange also apparently plays a big role, but I am sure that I will try out ADSL before end of this year.
