Which ethernet cable type is the most suitable for home use if one was looking towards the next ten years for a family of four to provide a reasonable level of future proofing? Internet speed is currently at 1Gbps, and working from home will continue for me. In two of the rooms I'm also stuck with Cat 5e since I can't remove those easily (maybe not at all), but these are the last mile connections so not too worried about it.

A short overview of expected wired devices:
TV
Soundbar / amplifier
HTPC / NAS
Console
4 or 5 PCs
2 wireless access points (PoE)

If you're going to replace / run cables throughout then rather future proof with CAT6. Are you finding that you're constantly running your 1Gbps at capacity?

Other: Im still using Token Ring

Joking, You need to work out total length of LAN cable and the price per metre of Cat 5e,6,6a and 8 and then see how deep your pocket goes. Thats what I would do

Cat 8 is about 2.5x more expensive, so I am looking at 10Gbps for Cat 6a and thinking that is going to be plenty. Mostly wondering if there is some reason I don't know of yet why I should fork out for Cat 8.

Also depends how long cable lengths you're gonna run
If it is a measly 20 metres then go for the best, but if you're gonna run 12km then you need to go as cheap as what is sensible
