Hi mates,

So i am looking for a solution to
-monitor my home network (graphing ,historical logging, live traffic monitoring/live bandwidth utilisation)
-do QOS and bandwidth management
-dial multiple ISP accounts at the same time (is this possible) and route certain traffic over one ISP etc etc

I have an ADSL connection and space is limited where the router sits so I'd prefer a compact but still feature rich solution. I am comfortable working with complex configurations over a command line and have been considering the Mikrotik routers (no experience with them at all yet but i can quickly learn) and the options i have come across are below:

http://www.antennas.co.za/Products/ProductDetails?code=148
http://www.antennas.co.za/Products/ProductDetails?code=150

So of those two is there a benefit if i go with the more expensive one? Are there better/ cheaper sources of the Mikrotik besides poynting? Are there any other better devices from other manufacturers that can handle my requirements besides the Mikrotik options?

Thanks guys

Ok. Just another note i have a Netgear NAS running linux and i have SSH access, so i can use it to install some logging software to receive the historical log data and do the graphing. I'm open to suggestions on the software tool to use for the historical data on the NAS.

Also I'd prefer a non-PC based solution so untangle or pfsense and the likes will not fit.

I see scoop has the little Mikrotiks for less , but then do they sell to end customers or its distributors only?

Edit: For even less with wifi http://www.scoopdistribution.co.za/product_info.php/ros-650mhz-32mb-4xfe-1x24ghz-p-1773 . Why so cheap? Is this also an option for my needs?

Unless you know what you are doing with a Mikrotik I recommend the above option on an old PC instead.

Thanks for the suggestion appreciate it. I work with Cisco routers so if i have to I'm sure I'll find the path into the Mikrotik world. It's not an urgent project so I'll also use it as a learning curve if i go Mikrotik. Is there any other competing manufacturers who do powerful little routers like the Mikrotiks, because if not then i guess it will boil down to which Mikrotik model i have to go with. Most important features are live BW monitoring & BW management.

Aaah okay yes if you know your way around Mikrotik will be fine then.

But the Sophos UTM system is very nice and still easier to manage.

I'm also curious about this. My current set up is an OpenWRT router, I have a home-grown perl script pulling stats from my DLink-2500U router, and stuffing them into an RRD, and some more perl making graphs from them. That's mostly just for ADSL bit errors, etc, though.

FWIW, I currently have multiple Internet interfaces running on my router, one using PPPoE (best route), one falling back to ethernet via the 2500U (backup ADSL credentials), and a third using a 3G modem/MiFi device for worst case connectivity. It is easy enough to set it up to route only the traffic you want to pass over the various interfaces, though. Since OpenWRT is just Linux, this is a pretty easy thing to set up and use. I suspect that bandwidth management may be slightly more complicated than the Mikrotik solution, though.

My next step is to set up collectd on the router to report stats from the various network interfaces, which will be collected by my NAS, and stored there. However, since the NAS is already running collectd for its own purposes (OpenMediaVault), I need to figure out how best to integrate the new requirements into the existing framework.
