A little insight goes a long way
i have a bit of a problem with my network at home and i was hoping someone would be able to help me sort it out. okay so maybe i kept making the network more and more complicated, but all of it is pretty necessary.
i have uploaded a diagram of the whole setup here
anyways, basically there's 3 routers involved: a billion 7300g, a linksys wrt54gl, and an asus wl500g. the billion is running the latest firmware from www.billionsa.com, while the linksys and asus are both running dd-wrt custom firmware. all routers are wireless, and the billion has a built in adsl modem.
now, the billion acts as the main router. it connects to the internet and i have enabled pppoe on it.
the lynksis acts as a wireless client bridge with the billion, so there is no physical connection between the two. a server computer, an xbox 360 and a ps3 are all connected to the linksys. the server computer is also wirelessly connected to the billion so that it can initiate its own pppoe connections to the internet for the purpose of using routesentry. this works fine.
finally, the asus is physically connected to the linksys with a very long (15m) network cable. it is however set up as an access point, and connects another xbox 360 as well as other wireless clients upstairs through its own wireless ssid, which is ultimately just linked to the network.
my problem is that normal internet access through the network is erratic. sometimes it works but only for a short "burst" before it stops responding for 15-60 seconds and then it works again for 10-30 seconds, rinse and repeat. this behaviour is apparent when connected to the asus and the linksys and from all the clients. however, pppoe connections from the server work fine all the time, i'm assuming because the packets don't get transported through the network as they go to the billion directly. as soon as i disable the wireless network card on the server, the problem persists. pinging www.google.com for instance, will show responses for a while, and then nothing for a while, and then responses for a while etc.
it seems like somewhere along the line the packets get "lost" in the network, because when i open a web page during a responseless period and leave the browser be, it sits and waits for a while until the response period comes and then the page loads. i don't know if that makes sense. networking within the network itself seems to be normal: pings are consistantly under 1ms and i get responses everytime, streaming media works perfectly and i can connect to my server using my laptop and remote desktop protocol.
the problem seems to have started as soon as i physically linked the asus and linksys routers, as before they were both just client bridges and i didn't have this problem. but i had to go physical because streaming hd content from the server started being a pain. so anyone have any experience or advise? it will be very much appreciated.
