Hi guys, I'm trying to configure my network with a wireless bridge of sorts, to minimise lightening damage.
I need help configuring the devices as shown in the (much simplified) diagram below:

Network Diagrams.jpg

- How to connect the two wirelessly? What settings on each device?
- Is it possible to connect the two without using the WAN port, and local traffic not having to go through the ADSL modem/router (don't want to limit local gigabit to wireless bottleneck)?

Ta, help much appreciated!

Are you using the modem/router (connected to Telkom line) for anything other than a modem?

This is just a theory - but I would imagine you could get something like a Ubiquiti Loco M2 (think they are about R400-450 now) and set it up as a station connected to the WiFi of your modem/router. Then run a cable from the Loco to the WAN port on your router.

This way you could still use the WiFi of the modem to just connect to the internet, if you would like, but eliminate the need for a cable between the two. Also, since it is on the WAN port the router should still handle the routing and not shimmy through the wireless signal.

This is really just a theory though and I am assuming you would be willing to spend a few extra bucks. I have only ever used the M2's together (one as AP others as stations) and never tried connecting them to a regular WiFi network - don't see why it won't work though.

I'm using a dlink dir825 with ddwrt custom firmware. I'm not sure how to set it up though. I'm thinking I should buy a wireless ap that can do bridging and connect that to the wan port on the router and bridge that to the adsl router? I need to be able to use the main router for wireless devices.

a lot of wireless routers have a "WDS" setting. this is the easiest way to bridge them wirelessly.
BUT this is not an iondustry standard, so getting 2 routers of the same make is really the only way to be sure that this works.

ddwrt firmware allows for all you want. search thier forums and you'll find an answer. That article i linked previously should give you a good place to start though.
