so i am thinking of getting one of these uncapped adsl packages available.

now my phone line (which will become the adsl line) is in dining room, my pc is in my room and the laptop gets used in the lounge (mostly).

so if someone can please tell me what hardware would i need to get/buy (please specify everything needed) to connect my laptop and pc to the adsl connection , so that both pc's can be connected to the net. wireless would be my 1st choice

sorry for the noob question, but i am clueless when it comes to these things as my current home connection is through 3g on my cell, and occasionally the 56k dialup modem

Basically the simplest is get yourself a Wi-fi ADSL Router. That way you can connect to the internet via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Try to get a router which supports 802.11N (Wireless-N) since that is the latest and fastest standard. It should cost you from R500-800 or so.

You'd also need to get a wifi dongle or card for the desktop in order to connect to the router.

If you're Notebook support Wireless N, you can get it, otherwise, to be safe, go for G. You can ask a salesman when you want to purchase you wireless router. Maybe you'll get the router with you ADSL package

Personally I will keep the PC connected VIA cable. It's just more stable...

A: WIFI N is backwards compatible with b/g, so that doesn't matter at all. Besides that, N has benefits regarding range, even with the older standards, so it's definitely the one to go for if budget permits.
B: He can't keep the PC connected via cable, because the PC is in a completely different room. Unless he doesn't mind running some cable against the walls and through the ceiling, of course.

As for getting the router through an ADSL package? That implies a contract of some form, which in the current climate where prices seem to drop weekly, would be the most stupid decision you've ever made.

It's incredibly easy to set everything up through the wi-fi router especially if you have Win7. That's your best course of action IMO.

cool thanks guys...

...so i am looking at a wireless router with 2 dongles (if my laptop doesn't have built-in wireless)

802.11N (Wireless-N)

i don't feel like going into a store, so i will have a look at an online retailer sybaritic or prophecy for one of these

on this note, will it make a difference if the pc has winXP (sp3) and the laptop has vista home

Nah. I network across multiple OS's to share files, stream media and so on.

1) You will need a wireless router.
2) Chances are you will get one with your ADSL line from Telkom!
3) You laptop will have a built in wifi adapter!

i looked the mweb special with adsl line for 349, but i think they charge 599 for a modem.

dumb question, but is a router also a modem?

i found this D-Link DIR-615 Wireless N Router, is this what i need.

cool, so if the laptop has wireless already, then i only need a D-Link DWA-525 Wireless N 150 PCI Adapter
for my pc in my room

You got it bud.

nice...so just to make sure i have all my ducks in a row....

....order my adsl package with adsl line (lets says mweb, although i see other uncapped packages for cheaper), and once the line is upgraded to adsl, buy the 2 goodies, read the manual to install and connect everything, then i'm sorted and all my pcs are connected to the net?

sidenote// can i play online, for example MW2 through this router/setup?

That router doesn't have a modem built in, it seems, so it won't do.
Instead, you're looking for something more along these lines: http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/product_info.php?cPath=122_458&products_id=13337

As for you being able to play online games with that setup: sure, you ought to be able to. Obviously latency may be a bit of an issue with the MWeb uncapped, but you'll get that with most shaped products, uncapped or no.
