Guys,

I've tweaked and fiddled and bought new equipment and I can't for the life of me get a decent signal through my house. So, am thinking.... if anyone is interested in an afternoon project (I assume an afternoon or an hour or two would do it) PM me a quote. I'm live in PTA.

Thanks!

M

I assume that you are talking about wirless network, the only thing i can think of is placing multiple wireless access points in the house and connecting them all via network cable!

Yes. That's the thing... I'm hoping to avoid cables all around... I'm hoping for a more elegant solution.

If you want a decent wireless signal, then you need to have at least an access point with an external antenna.

If you want the signal to propagate in a horizontal plane, then the antenna should be pointed in a vertical direction. Access points can't really let the signal work on 2 story buildings.

The best that you can do in terms of wireless signal strength would be to get a router with like 3 external antennas that supports MIMO and wireless N.

- Try changing the channel on which the wireless router broadcasts, it could be that something in your house is interfering with the signal e.g cordless phone.
- Place the wireless router as high as possible e.g. on a bookshelf
- Contact Poynting and purchase something from them (http://www.poynting.co.za/)

Was there not a product that could boost wireless signal via electrical points? A type of plug into the wall product? I am also looking to boost my wireless signal and have no ceiling to run cables through and do not want to run them on the roof or along the walls.

Jase, Netgear makes a product which you have mentioned (http://www.duxbury.co.za/Netgear/powerline_adapters.html). I tried to install one about two years ago without much success as it also depended on where one had power outlets. If the distance is too far from the base station which plugs into the network switch, it doesn't work. Tried it in a double story house and eventually gave up trying to make it work.

Thanks for the info. I may have to go the wired route and run cabling along the outside of the house then :(

Stick with the same brand all round, get a couple of AP's and fiddle with the aerial directions, set everything but the router up as a repeater.

Also forgot to suggest that on most wireless routers, the broadcast strength can be set. Check & see if the router is broadcasting @ maximum strength...

Hi Jase,

I agree that the best would be to work with the N types of routers, as they are the ones that bounces off walls and around corners to increase wireless signal. If you start off with one of those and then have a repeater that picks up the wireless and repeats it on like the D-Link DAP-1360 Wireless N Range Extender (for R550) and then get wireless all around..

Otherwise if you do want to go with the wired route as a long shot I'd also suggest then running your LAN through your house's electric system than getting a cable all around the house. Something such as Western Digital's Powerline. Then you basically end up with a switch where you want it by just plugging the router in the one part and placing the other part over the house where you need it in a power socket. They're R835...
