OK guys, here's the story. Got my own DSL line (finally) and now I wanna get it setup.
So, I figured I'd get one of these

http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?event=viewProduct&cid=5&scid=118&localeCode=EN_USA&pid=1627

And for the mean time, my mate has given me his DLink 504T - which is a piece of crap if you ask me
What I wanna do is:

1) Run the DLink as purely a link for the DSL. I assume this has to be done in bridge mode
2) Connect the SMC Barricade to run PPPoE

Thats it, and I cant seem to get it right. I've tried every setting possible today, Googled until I couldnt take it anymore and almost drowned my friends modem in the pool
Can anyone break this process down (not the drowning, the setup) for me. Dunno If Im missing a setting somewhere along the line

Theres a utility on both the modem and the router where you can ping. I can dial up without problems from the SMC. Nothing happening from the DLink. Once I can ping, there still isnt any internet access on my PC. No matter is I try and connect through Ethernet or Wireless

If this isnt possible, I'll be boring and get a modem + router combo :?
Thanks guys

Uhm .... why not use just the SMC to connect  ..... that's what I do.

not the wireless one no ..... but as much as I know about wireless, don't you have some sort of dongle or something for your PC?

2) Wireless antennae. These allow connections from other wireless devices - NICs (network interface cards), wireless repeaters, wireless access points, and wireless bridges)

don't you have one of these?

Then that is not the router you have:
The Barricade™ N Draft 11n Broadband Router (SMCWBR14-N2) is the perfect all-in-one networking solution for connecting and sharing your high speed cable/xDSL internet connection.

Try the following:

Set the D-LINK to bridge and IP to 192.168.1.1
Set PPPoE on SMC and make the IP 192.168.2.1

Or

Let the D-Link make the PPPoE connection and then just enable DHCP on the SMC.

I'll give that a shot. Atm Im using:
DLink - 192.168.1.1
SMC - 192.168.1.2

DHCP on the DLink. Im not so great with networking - so what should I have enabled/disabled on the DLink? That has the complicated interface, I know whats going on with the SMC:D

They must not be on the same range....

D-Link 192.168.1.1
SMC 192.168.2.1

You could let the D-Link or SMC do the PPPoE connection.
If the D-Link does the PPPoE then you must enable DHCP on the SMC (automatically obtain IP address)

But the best way will be to set the D-Link to bridge and then initiate the PPPoE connection from the SMC.

Remember the ranges. ;)

:o
I never knew that, about the ranges... thanks for that dude:p
I'll give it a bash tomorrow and see what I can come up with

If that works, Im gonna courier you a beer;)

hey Snor ... there's a desperate cat in another thread that needs some help, hehe .... shame he's been asking for a week :D

You can buy me a few when I come down to CT again.... :p

You gotta deal bud:D
One more thing, my line is supposed to be 4mb. Here's what the router throws out

Any ideas?

SNR MARGIN :eek: Way too low.... Your are lucky that your line even sync. Do you get ADSL drops?

That could also be why you are only synching at 2Mb and not 4Mb.

Not so many drops... but ja - the speed is a bit annoying. You know anything that can sort the issue out?
The downstream synch changes everytime the modem is rebooted

Could be a number of things.

Noise on the line, does your phone have a bad line?
Faulty or no filters on telephone/fax lines
Faulty cables in your house
Problem with the wiring between you and the exchange
Faulty DSLAM port.

If you do a search on the forum on attenuation then you will also see a few comments about people with the same problem as you.

BTW What does the downstream change to every time?
