hi all.
I just set up my new l337 machine, and now i want to connect it to my old machine via a simple network. I got a cheap marconi 4 port routher and wasnt to use it as a hub for my 2 PC's. I got everything connected but the two PC's arent seeing each other. What do I do?
Thnx
RB:)

Are you using a firewall? Try to disable it on both machines, get them to "see" each other (just easier to do it this way), then reactivate firewall, and open access to other machine.

I had problem between my XP box and Linux box because of firewalls.

rburley ...

DETAILS ... ???
/me guesses WinXP machines

Basically WinXP's default config without a domain controller does not let the machines see each other. You'll need to run the Network Connection wizard and setup one as the Master and the rest as the users of the master, or if the cheap switch does the DHCP then it must be the master and ...

Details !!!

firstly, make sure the link lights on your connections on both PC's are on.

On the network connections tab, assign a static IP for each PC, say 192.168.0.1 for the primary PC, and 192.168.0.10 fro the secondary PC. The masks should be 255.255.255.0.

Switch your firewall off, the try to ping each PC form the other PC, if successful, use the default share. One can access it by typing in “//192.168.0.X/c$” in start run, where x is the PC to accessed.

okay i got it working but i had to disable the firewalls.
But i need them on!!!
how do i let them work with firewall installed?

if these are the only two PC's on your network, firewall can be off.
One can set up exclusions in your firewall to allow certain protocolls, and or programs, and have different configs for diferent connections

i want my firewall on, i have adsl and therefor need it

dude firewalls are pointless in opinjion for a silly home network

for big networks with lotsa info flowing between pc's yes

but not for 2 pc's

worry more bout anti virus then firewall

Yeah - best you get the firewall working again. Even if you had only one pc connected it would be foolish not to use it. Which one is giving you the grief?

Because while i'm connected via PPPoE I get at least 3 messages from Trend Micro saying it has blocked a virus or attack on my computer

So without a firewall, you're quite vulnerable IMO

with no firewall you are very vulnerable
and for a good free anti virus try www.avast.com (home edition) works better than Nortons for a firewall you can try zonealarm, it also has a anyspyware built into it .
