Guys, I have a Billion 510s router (it has one Ethernet port and one USB) I work on a laptop at work and obviously I have a desktop at home. My question:

My laptop works on a domain (I do not have admin rights, but have hacked the admin account), and my PC at home is on a workgroup. I would like to transfer a fair amount of data from my laptop to my desktop (about 10Gb). Therefore I thought it would be easiest to network these two machines, but how?

If I remove my laptop from the domain, I will be unable to join the domain again, as you need a domain admin account to be able to do this...

Any advice?

What OS's are you using?

Try creating an account on your laptop (if you say you "hacked" the admin account) on your local machine and then use those credentials when you try and access the share from your desktop.

On another note, does your router have WiFi? Transferring 10Gb might take some time over a WiFi network...

Why not use a memory stick, if its a once-off transfer it might takes less time (and frustration) than trying to set up the sharing and get it to work.

Windows 7 has a handy feature called Homegroup, which makes accessing shares quite simple, even if one of the machines are on a domain.

Good luck.

Thanks Rudi.

I am running XP on the laptop and Vista on the PC. No WiFi, otherwise I reckon it would have been a bit easier as the laptop has built in wifi...

Only have a 4Gb memory stick, and the one file I want to transfer is 6.7Gb. I suppose I could split it using HJ split or something similar...

Thanks for the advice though, will check out my options.

If I understood your first post correctly, your router only has one LAN port and one USB. With that I don't think you would be able to achieve what you are aiming for ie. a home networking setup over LAN. I don't think you would be able to hook up one PC via the LAN and the other via the USB. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Can you not borrow a switch from someone (or just buy one from one of the shops, Matrix used to sell cheapie 100 Mbps switches for just over R100). You dont really need a router for what you are trying to achieve, a switch will do just fine.

Or else talk to your IT Manager, maybe you can bring the desktop box/case in to work, and do the copying via the work LAN. Unless the files you want to copy is not to be seen by others...;)

I'm probably aiding in stealing confidential info, but here goes :p

Configure laptop and Desktop on same IP Range: 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2. Add subnet 255.255.255.0, leave DNS and Gateway blank.

Connect both with standard cable. Click start>run> type in your Desktop ip as follow: \\192.168.0.1\c$ >Press enter> it will prompt for username and password, use your default User details which you use to access windows eg. JoeSlaughter password: joe'spassword.

Press ok and copy and paste the files from the laptop to the desktop under the correct folder.

Thanks for all your input guys! Really appreciate it.

This is what I did:

Connected my laptop to the router via te USB connection, installed my router software on the laptop. Created a folder on my PC (connected via LAN) shared it with a user I created on my PC, gave that user admin rights on my PC. In networking centre I used the wizard to connect my PC and laptop. Rebooted my laptop and tried to ping my PC with PC name, tried to ping laptop with laptop name. Success. Tried to copy one X 6Gb file, fail! Out of space... Created a new folder on another drive with 400Gb free space, did the same and voila! Works like a charm.

Basically the router acts as a switch.

Thanks anyway for all your input I really appreciate it.

And no worries, you are not aiding the theft of confidential info... :) Just illegal software... ;) JK..
