More advice please!

Guys,
thanks for the advice on this forum. I must confess I didn't think anyone would be answering dumb questions like mine, so THANKS!:)
From reading all the posts I want to set up something similar to the following(cost is an issue!) :
(I want to use SKYPE overseas a lot and upload photographs to a website.) A 384DSL line with a 3Gb shaped connection to my ISP
Netgear DG834GTUK 108 Mbps Wireless ADSL Firewall Router or Billion 7202GR2; PCMCIA card(s) for laptops. Will all this be sufficient? Do I need VoIP modem if I want to buy a SKYPE type phone or will those above work? Digital Planet seems to have a special on the Netgear stuff at the moment!:D
BTW what's the range on the wireless network? Will I be able to work about 20m away from modem in another room?

Yes - that should more than suffice.

Get a usb phone (I use the cyberphone k) if money is a constraint or a skype WIFI phone if it's not.

RESOLVED

A big thanks to all that contributed to answering my questions, especially to bwana v1.4 ...

Sorted myself out today and got the network working ... how did I do it?

Got myself 2x wireless usb2.0 adapters (125mbps) = cost R400 incl

Followed instructions on cd ... set it up as an ad hoc network ... peer to peer ... and boom ... could print from both pc and share files between them ....

total time spent +- 1 hour.

distance between pc 15 m, 3 walls, getting between 55-100 mbps. gonna move the adapters a bit higher and see what happens.

thanks again,

sdd

My home setup is as follows

DG834GT (bridged mode) ---> WPNT834 (an excellent kickass pre-n MIMO router) for greater range and coverage with those 3 aerials sticking out.

I utterly loath using wireless USB dongles ... too flaky.

All three PC's in our households have wireless cards in them (one netgear and two cheaper Dlink's) and they are setup with XP Home and all have static IP's to connect to the router for easier management i.e to only allow kids friendly sites to be accessed from the kids computer.

The DG834GT was a mistake in hindsight not for it's ADSL but wireless as I could never play along nicely with the Dlink cards I had even thought they supposedly both used the same bloody chipset ... the signal strength through three walls was rather low.

So I could have gotten away with using a cheap ADSL modem like a Billion above but I had the GT already and it was paid for.

So it is a bit pricey setup I know but I'd rather buy something decent the first time around then replacing stuff to what works perfectly and what I really wanted in the first place over time.

Skype is fine over a wireless network - why wouldn't it be? Your wireless network is faster then your internet connection.

A wireless network also makes having one of these Skype wifi phones worthwhile.
