Hi all...I didn't see any recent postings for this...

Any recommendations for a decent inkjet printer for home use. Doesn't need to be a multi-function. Would like to balance good quality printing with purchase cost (<R1000) and cost of cartridges.

Thanks in advance...

I hate inkjets. Rather go laser. Cheaper to run for regular infrequent use. A cheap Samsung should you you going. Sure the toner carts are not full when you buy the, a new one would cost in the region of R700 - 800, but honestly, for infrequent use I find them much better.

If you need the occasional color, just pop down to the local PostNet.

Thanks kayvee, but regular colour will be needed as my wife does some printing for her Grade 2 teaching material.

Yeah, depends on your colour requirements, for me it's off to PostNet on the rare occasion. Colour laser? They have come down in price, but I have no experience to offer.

Personally I avoid ink-jet printers like the plague ... :(

That said, best purchase one that has separate ink containers, e.g. Canon sell a unit at around R1K that has five separate ink containers.

Incidentally I have never used Canon so am unable to comment on their reliability.

Okay - any recommendations for a value for money colour laser printer then? Didn't really want to spend too much upfront, but I am assuming one saves in the long run?

You should have a look at the HP 6500 or 8500 series inkjets. They're cheaper and much faster to print with than small laser printers, but I think the 6500 models start at a bit less than R2k. Obviously these would only make sense if you print enough to justify the initial outlay though.

Incredible Connection is advertising the Samsung CLP 315 colour laser for R999.95. The price seems to good to be true, other places in the region of R1500. As for the cost/performance of the cartridges, refer to kayvees' post above.
