Hey peeps.

Any goog free Proxy server suggestions for home use?

I have about 7 devices connected and would like to:

  1. stop multiple copies of data be re-downloaded from different devices
  2. cache things like YouTube videos for like a day
  3. limit speeds for one specific pc in the house
  4. updates are killing me, i do not want a WSUS server, cause it downloads every freaking update available, i just want the proxy to cache the downloaded file, and if another pc wants to download that file it will grab it from the cache

i am currently using CC proxy, but the caching is not working that great... or... should i say, it does not cache what i want to.

PFSense + Squid.

PFSense for the firewall / rate limiting bit and Squid for the caching.

ClearOS is another good option. I use it in our production environment, and it does wonders for bandwidth saving, updates etc. As well as rate limiting, content filtering etc.

I wouldn't bother. My impression is that with the high amount of dynamic content as well as sites/services moving to https there isn't a lot to cache.

Would still be worth doing rate limits etc. which you can do on something cheap like an RB750.

Interesting....

i have a Billion 7300NX router, would i have some of these options on it by default? Cause most of my devices are wireless.

No idea on the billion. Rb750 has packet marking and queuing so you can build quite complex QoS rules.

I'd also advocate PFSense and Squid. It's going to be part of a project I'm doing over December to upgrade our home network, so it'll be interesting to see how much it saves me over time in bandwidth and actual data use. I'll probably only cache objects from 0.1MB to 2.5MB in size because I'll only have a 40GB IDE drive inside the machine, but it will be an interesting test. I might have a use for that Pentium 4 board I keep spare.

PFSense + Squid is good a good combination especially if you like to implement QoS. There are alternatives I have tested and trailed and all depends what exactly you would like to achieve.

PFSense + Squid= Good monitoring all traffic + caching, Brilliant firewall interface.
IPFire= Content filtering, Caches Updates, Layer 7 QoS and some more. Nice part is if you have compatible WIFI card it can act as an AP
IPCop = Older version of IPFire

There are others but these 3 are my top choices.
If you game a lot then I`ll go with PFSense. If not then IPFire is most likely your best solution.
