It seems there's two opinions on this.

1. Turn all the lights off at night so as to not aid burglers vision
2. Leave all the lights on so you can see if anyone is hiding anywhere

Thoughts?
 
Outside lights off at midnight.
 
So we're busy renovating at home. Our one boundary wall is currently exposed to our neighbor who has no boundary walls.

We usually kept the outside lights on at night but during this phase I've been switching them off.

A zombie found its way onto the property a few nights ago and ate total scht as it tripped over a half finished wooden walkway. Woke me and the wife up it was so loud.

The unscrewed boards on the walkway were all over the show and there was a massive patch of plants in the shape of said zombie that were flattened.

I'm just sad it didn't get a rusty nail in it's eye when falling.
 
Lights in front of house is left on. Everything behind is off. Most neighbour's does the same
 
16 lights around the house and 4 solar floodlights. If they trip the motion sensors, gate sensor or electric fence sensor, armed response can come and aim better...
 
just get a strobe light and leave it on 24/7, every tried to run or walk around in a night club, it's like slowmo :ROFL:

on a more logical note, ask yourself this, "when do the majority of burglaries happen, during the day or night?" then ask yourself, "why do they break in at night???" I promise it's not for the newly cooked dinner waiting for them...
 
Lights on, so I can more easily see what is going on in the garden, even if just walking somewhere in the house, out of any window, and it aids the CCTV too.

My question to the lights-off-so-the-criminal-can't-see people, what do you do over the near or full moon period?
 
Lights on, though studies contradict themselves on if this is actually a deterrent for crime.
It seems that to much light may not be a good thing if obscures shadows allowing never do wells to still lurk. But enough lighting to see them and others to see them can deter.
So we have 3 day nights in the front, one over the driveway and gate, other covering part of the garden and another the other side.
3 solar lights that cover other parts for the majority of the night unless it's been really cloudy and some smaller motion sensor lights on walls through out.
 
A combination is necessary, good lighting is important. Very low-wattage lights on a day-night switch all around, and PIR activated floodlights.
Decent cameras like Hikvision ColorVu do not need extra light, they produce excellent colour footage regardless, and they are relatively cheap.
