Hey all

Im sorry if this is the wrong place to post this thread.

I built a computer from part i found lying around. I want to use it as a Server.
The Spec's are not great but it runs smoothly on Windows 7.
I am a gamer but this computer cant really run games well.

Well the point is.. I now have a Server PC and i need some ideas for its use.
What do people usually use Server PC's for other then Backing up Files and Keeping data on it...

Its going to be online and i want it to be Online related so others over the internet can use it for specific reason... i dunno... i just want some sort of use for this PC.
Thanks :D

Move your downloading to it.

Like for news SABNZBD

For torrents uTorrent

and use network interfaces for those apps, so you can administer them from your internet broswers on the network.

If you have an iPod or iPhone install AirVideo, and you can watch your videos over wirelss (it will convert all formats to ipod compatible)

Use subsonic and stream your music to your network.

Run folding@home and contribute to medicine... just some stuff ;)

Firstly, Windows 7 is not the OS you should be running as a server. Windows 2008 Server or Linux Ubuntu/debian are my personal choices.
On there:
- Dialing up , Route splitting (Router)
- Squid 3.1.9 Cache (this is a MUST! You will love how this will speed up your browsing and reduce cap usage)
- Torrents & Media/HTTP/FTP Server?
- NTP server
- DNS server
- Mail server

this is good, im interested in this folding.

i should try hosting a mail server and load Linux....

What is the best Linux out there... linux has soooo many different versions.

1) Firewall PC
2) Downloading PC
3) Media Server
4) NAS
5) Linux PC
6) Older Games PC... for those old games that you still love but which no longer work under Windows 7.

An extra PC always comes in handy , no matter what the specs are.

Mine I use for ..

* Downloading
* Game Server
* Web browsing for friends and family when the visit ( they won't touch my PC !! :) )
* Older games (like Gary mentioned) my young niece enjoy those.

So many other possibilities I suppose.

I use my ancient history PC that I resurrected from the garage when I got uncapped. I use it as a server for our digs, with XP:

1) uTorrent with RSS feeds from showRSS
2) Media server with windows shares
3) XBMC server
4) DC++ for those in the digs with turd graphics cards and can't run XBMC.
5) Bandwidth monitoring
