Home theater questions

My I high-jack a little? i also have a 5.1 lg system, but will need to get a new amp/player soon, cause the lg is junk. BUT, my question is, so little dvd's and even audio cd's give 5.1 output. The most of the them just stereo. Or do I do something wrong?

Most music is made/designed for 2 channel/stereo listening, not surround listening.

I assume you mean for music DVDs and CDs? Movies pretty much all have surround sound these days.

It's strange, surround systems are so popular, why not produce the dvd's or cd's for it. Makes it somewhat pointless to have surround sound then.

What I sometimes do with dvd's with low audio quality, is I connect the rear speakers together with the front speakers. Then I hear the same sound at the back than in front. Helps a bit.

Just something else, does all of the amps/players mentioned in this thread (pioneers etc), have radio too like the lg I have now?

Surround sound is intended for movies and has been like that for around 50 years, not music. There was once surround sound for music, but it just never took off and people preferred 2 speakers. Remember, music used to be mono - from one speaker. I guess people just didn't want to have 4 speakers. These days, you can achieve virtual surround sound on 2 decent speakers by using Dolby Pro Logic.

Yip, they will have FM/AM digital tuners.

I've just come back from a pub - so I'm not going to Google :/

But every DVD should be 5.1 - either DD or DTS (rare) and at the very least a BR is 5.1 ...

... and now that I can think straight :

SACD is a music only format and had 5.1 sound. It really does sound awesome and it's a pity that the format never took off :/

There's also DVD-A but just like SACD never really took off.

I'll be honest, I don't like my music in surround and still prefer plain old stereo.

It wasn't as good in sound quality or application IMO. SACD should have been big :/

Surround music is awesome. I had the same belief - until I heard some properly mastered surround music tracks!
