onkyo has htib for 5999 on special, seen it at a few stores
not sure if it has hdmi pasthrough or repeating, anyone know?

looking for a link now...
 
Thanks for all the responses, still not sure what system to go with. seems my friend wants to go with something like this samsung set. Quick question regarding such all in one systems. does the sound and video get sent over the hdmi cable to the tv and would they be able to hook up the dstv through the unit to have tv sound through the HT set? or would it be better to go for the suggested sony setup with a blue ray player?
 
I think it depends whether the amplifier does audio processing on the HDMI inputs. Wouldn't imagine that sound is passed straight to the TV if you're running it through a 5.1 amplifier but you never know! My guess would be that video is passed through to the TV and audio plays through the speakers connected to the amplifier.
 
Finally decided on a Samsung HTiB, the C5500. Primarily because it was a really good price (R2999) and feature wise was much better than the Sony. Only downside is not quite a "proper" receiver and speaker set but with BluRay player, HDMI output, 2 HDMI inputs, 1 optical input, iPod dock, Ethernet port (with optional wireless module) for media streaming and upgradability to wireless rear speakers, figured it was a good buy. Finish is very nice in piano black, sound is quite reasonable for the price although sub little small and speakers not made from wood so little hollow but overall good product.
 
The higher-end AV store in Clearwater Mall has the Onkyo HTib:
HDMI 3 x 1.4 inputs, HDMI repeater, upscaling, SPDIF, Coax digital inputs, Dolby True HD, DTS HD decoding for a quite nice price :R5999.00
(and I see you are in Kaapstad stevenv...so not really applicable
 
It was at Makro's birthday sale. Not sure if it's still on but the branch I went to (Ottery) had loads of them.
 
Can anyone recommend a system with receiver?. My budget is between 8k-10K

Anyhow - why not look at pre-owned necroman?

I have a slightly different take on components to most other guys. I prefer buying an older high end product at a fraction of the initial price, as long as it suits my needs. These things can be had at half the price or less and sound far, far better than what you'll get.

You don't need the latest HD formats because in all honesty, not many can actually pick up huge differences. In my case they're not even on my rips, so a 5.1 is all I need - and older high end does it well
