If you had more money, you could have bought a valve 5.1 amp. Doesn't do video, but it does audio very very good.

But remember that good speakers will cost abut 2-3 times the cost of the receiver...


edit: I'd suggest rather spending the money on a TV rather than going too high end on audio. If you spend an extra 10K you can get a Full HD TV...

this is what i got going to sandton city at lunch, so far the audionote setup seems to be he one to go for.
shaun at soundnote suggested that i use my xbox as my dvd player and get the following , he said it will be the same as using a hd dvd player.
*ONKYO 504 amp
*Polk m50 fronts
*Polkcs1 center
*Polk m30 rears
*Polk psw12 sub
All for R14890, he did a demo for me on the bigger speakers and they were nice, even the smaller speakers seem (spec wise) to be more than I would need(esp since the room is not built to conceal sound and i don't want the neighbours to phone the police).

Then went to Fotocats, the guy there suggested the following screens:
*LG 42lc2rr (lcd)
*LG 42pc1r (plasma)
*Sony e200 42"

for decoder thing and dvd:
*Sony dg800 decoder 2500
*Sony ns76 1500

speakers all Jamo:
*e680 main
*e600 surround
*e8 center
*1810 sub

These are the only two places I could get to in lunch so I still have to visit the other places

Only problem I have with using the 360 as a dvd player is the fan noise. You still also need to get the 360 HD drive. Are they available locally yet?

Does anyone have more info on this? will the xbox elite have an hd drive? the fan noise doesn't really bother me.

what would the hd drive cost. i just cant understand why the xbox doesn't have a hd drive now? you can play games in hd on it now? i am confused!

You can play HD games now because the content fits on a dvd, a movie however wouldnt.

AFAIK the elite differs only to the standard one in respect of the the case colour, it has HDMI, and a larger hdd.

I'd definitely go with the Sony BRAVIA 40S over the LG for TV.

the 40s is aboput R21000, for that money maybe a Bravia 3 LCD Rear Projection Television 50" would be a better option.

Ya lol but they have the silver and design just perfect on those! Also Harmon & Cordon and B&O are good if you going so big! And remember the cables are just as important but the sales guy will tell you that, from me, you should spend 10% of sound system on the cables.

Nope... I don't think so - I'd rather go with a panel TV. Resolution is the same (720p) only size is better for the E42. If you're going to RP, go for a SXRD model with 1080p (but that's around R29K for a 50").. http://www.sony.co.za/prod.asp?DTID=1&CID=49&SID=285&PID=2309
The LCD projection performance is limited by the LCD panels that are used, and suffer from "screendoor" effect.
 
These jamo speakers seem to have a wood finish, so I doubt its the ones in the window.I have read up on the rating and it seems the Polk and Onkyo system will be the better choice.
 
Well I might be able to pick up the 50" sxrd rp tv for close to the bravia 40s' money. However I will have to see the demo of the different screens first , no-one seems to really be running hd content on their display, so its difficult to choose. New world in Menlyn is the only place I know that displays full hd content on their screens.
 
Maybe i need to hold out till next year when laser tv technology will be here, any thoughts?
 
Yea I saw someone say 'laser TV' earlier as well ... thought I wouldn't ask as I'd more than likely get an explaination ;) However I didn't - so what is laser TV?
 
It's just DLP with a laser source. I wouldn't hold my breath.
