Hi

Anyone out there using HomeConnect Fibre service on Metrofibre network?

Experience? Support?

They seem to have a funny setup - Cant use your own router - Metrofibre ONT plus their cheap router. If you want your own router connected then you have a 3rd router connected to theirs.

Just feels like you will be driving a formula 1 car on a dirt track! :D

Hi
I'm using HC on Vumatel. Same setup required AFAK.

I use my own router, but still have their router, in order to get full speed.

ONT --> HC Router --> My Router --> LAN/WLAN

I have HC forward all ports to my router, and they configured my router with a static DHCP address. So when ever my router is rebooted and comes up, it gets the same IP, and all the port forwarding works. I asked them to turn off WiFi on their router too.

I like to be in control.

All is working well, and I am getting full upload and download speeds on my 20 Mbps fibre. I am able to connect to devices I put in my DMZ or port forwarding. All configured on my router, not theirs.

I'm curious as (not so knowledgeable) to know what the drawbacks are of HC setup regarding the use of their router and them retaining control.

It can impact your latency and complicate the setup. For what I require, I have not been impacted and I have no issue streaming from YouTube, Netflix or other.

HC have a small issue, as they believe you may open up yourself for attach, but you sign a waiver, and then that is done with.

I am not comfortable with other people administering my firewall/router. I've always maintained a certain amount of control even with work systems and outsource partners.

Hi there,

I also have this issue of wanting to control my own network, but home connect want to have their own router installed. What is the reason for this?

Apparently they use a VPN tunnel to manage traffic on their network, so that they can measure more accurately. I put an additional router between theirs and my LAN, and all works well. No issues. Just got them to forward all traffic to my router, and disable WiFi on their router too.

Doesn't it worry you they "measure/filter" on "uncapped" these days and force you to use their router..

Yes and No.... Yes, they are measuring..... No, as long as I am never throttled and get good performance...

When comparing "like for like"... it is very odd that fibre service costs vary by so much on the same line....

20 Mbps Down and 20 Mbps Up... Uncapped... R 648 Home-Connect..... vs R799 VOX & R899 Cool Ideas

Different products really, so there will be variation in pricing.

Really??? Is Vumatel fibre unshaped & uncapped 20/20 Mbps on various ISP's to the same house different.... so much so that it warrants such a large price difference? Nearly 40%

I have worked with networks and in ISP's... granted there are various factors impacting cost, from services offered and infrastructure, etc... but effectively for an identical performing service, a 40% premium.

I am merely trying to understand the premium, as on ADSL offers, the price differential is far lower than on fibre by the look of things. I also am aware of the lack of the R999 activation on Cool Ideas, however that should easily be recovered in the first 12 months or less, enabling a less expensive future monthly bill.

Hi H00va

Will you be willing to setup a default microtik and export the settings for the few of us that want to use our own microtiks but doesn't want to go threw all the problems of setting up our own ports

Hi there

I'm not sure what you are requesting? I only have the Home-Connect supplied Mikrotik. They did all the config, and do not allow one access. My main router for now is a D-Link, but I am looking at replacing it with a Linksys/Cisco by the end of the year.

Guys

I have Vumatel Fibre and have been using homeconnect. At first I used my own router then later on, switched to their router because my old router became a bottleneck with the higher speed. It's not true what guys are saying in this thread, you can use any router with Home-Connect all you need to do after you plug it into the CPE and unplug old router is call support and have them re-bind the CPE to the new router. I've done this twice without issue or questions
