Honda's second EV.

Honda e.Ny1

Honda has revealed its second fully electric vehicle, the e:Ny1, at its European Media Event in Offenbach, Germany. It is the brand's second pure EV to arrive in the region, following on from the widely acclaimed Honda e city car, and is designed to meet the growing customer demand for all-electric B-segment SUVs.

Offering a fresh, distinctive design and the latest advanced technology, the e:Ny1 follows Honda's human-centred development philosophy, making the most of the model's fully electric powertrain to deliver an SUV with fun-to-drive dynamics, a smooth and refined ride, and intuitive versatility.

A bold and sophisticated exterior aesthetic is created by a short front overhang, large wheels and a wide track. The e:Ny1 also debuts an all-new electric identity for Honda, with white 'H' badges featuring around the vehicle, including the nose badge, wheel centre caps and steering wheel. In addition, a new typeface spells out 'Honda' on the tailgate for a premium look that will feature on the brand's future EVs.

Clever packaging of the electric drivetrain components ensure Honda e:Ny1 offers remarkable interior space and comfort. An all-new centre console features a simple layout of easily accessible buttons, multiple storage options and wireless charging, while an uncluttered dashboard topped by a large 15.1-inch touchscreen provides access to a comprehensive suite of infotainment and driving options.

The e:Ny1 is built on Honda's newly-developed e:N Architecture F, a front-motor-driven platform focused on three fundamental attributes: A dedicated high rigidity body structure, a low centre of gravity, and carefully managed under-floor aerodynamics to ensure the SUV delivers a fun and confidence-inspiring drive.

In addition, the platform incorporates a high-performance, lightweight three-in-one integrated power drive unit, electric motor and gearbox. This generates a maximum output of 150 kW, 310 Nm of torque and is engineered to provide smooth and comfortable acceleration and deceleration. Under the floor sits a high-capacity lithium-ion battery that delivers up to 412 km (WLTP) of range and DC fast-charging capability that can go from 10 to 80% in just 45 minutes.

Honda e:Ny1 is Jeep Avenger rival with 256-mile range

HR-V lookalike kickstarts Honda's push into the electric mainstream; spearheads renewed SUV line-up

The new Honda e:Ny1 begins a bold push by the Japanese manufacturer to become a volume player in one of Europe's most important segments.

Previewed in prototype form in 2022, it's one of three crucial new electrified SUVs that Honda will launch in Europe this year, joining the new CR-V and ZR-V hybrid crossovers.

When it's launched in the coming months, at a starting price of roughly £30,000, it will serve as a direct rival to the likes of the Hyundai Kona Electric, Jeep Avenger and Peugeot e-2008.

Completely unrelated to the Honda E in terms of its positioning, technical make-up and design, the e:Ny1 is the first of a family of new-era EVs with which Honda is aiming to capture a significant proportion of the family EV market in Europe.

It's essentially an electric equivalent to the HR-V crossover launched in 2021 and looks very similar, but it's all-new inside and underneath and will be marketed as a completely bespoke model.

Meet the new Honda e:Ny1, a 200bhp fully electric SUV

Honda’s first fully electric SUV lands with up to 256 miles of range

Welcome to the first fully electric Honda SUV, and only its second fully electric car after the too-adorable-for-words Honda e. It is a car "designed to meet the growing customer demand for all-electric B-segment SUVs", which means: you ask, you get.

And yes, it’s really called the Honda e:Ny1 – ‘anyone’, anyone? – which makes perfect sense because it sits on a “newly-developed e:N Architecture F”. This new chassis promises lots of rigidity, a low centre of gravity and “carefully managed” underbody aero for a “confidence-inspiring drive”.

Allied to this new chassis is a high-performance powertrain, which houses the drive unit, electric motor and gearbox all in one for a total of 150kW (200bhp-odd in old money). Powering it is a 68.8kWh battery – able to fast charge from 10 to 80 per cent in just 45 minutes – that delivers up to 256 miles (412km) on the WLTP cycle.

So, small-ish SUV, decent range, new visual identity for Honda’s electric cars. Well, at least in terms of the white ‘H’ badge dotted around that five-door shape, and the new ‘Honda’ typeface on the tailgate said to deploy a “premium look” that’ll feature on later EVs too. Of the body itself? Honda champions its short overhangs and wide track, though it's perhaps a little more GenericSUV.

Honda e:Ny1 Revealed

The Honda e:Ny1 is the Japanese brand’s second fully-electric vehicle and has just been revealed. Here’s a first look at what’s on offer.

After the adorable Honda e city car broke cover, many have wondered what Honda would do next and here it is. This is the curiously-named Honda e:Ny1 which is positioned as an all-electric B-segment SUV.

First impressions from these images suggest similar design language to the Honda HR-V which is sold in South Africa. Honda Europe says the e:NY1’s design elements will be used on the brand’s future offerings.

Under the skin of the new Honda e:Ny1 is a brand-new platform called e:N Architecture F which is a front-driven setup with a focus on solid body structure, low centre of gravity and trick aerodynamics. There’s a 150 kW and 310 Nm electric motor that’s cleverly packaged into one unit along with the gearbox. The 68. 8 kWh battery is good for a range of 412 km based on the WLTP cycle and thanks to fast DC charging, can go from 10-80% in 45 minutes.

Honda is bringing the e:NP1 to Europe as the e:Ny1

The 2023 Honda e:Ny1 is the company's second fully-electric vehicle aimed at the European market and it's actually a rebranded e:NP1 released in July last year. Honda says that it wants to tap into the growing demand for SUVs from the B-segment in the region.

Honda shared a couple of images that confirm the e:Ny1's close relation to the Chinese e:NP1. Both cars look identical inside and out and are based on the e:N Architecture F with front-wheel drive drawing power from a 68.8 kWh battery and peaking at 201 hp. This ensures a 412 km (258 mi) range, while a fast-charging DC system can go from 10 to 80% in just 45 minutes.

The Honda e:Ny1 Gives the Toyota bZ4X a Run for Its Money in the Race to Come Up With the Most Incomprehensible Car Name Possible

A 68.8-kWh battery pack should give it 256 miles of range in Europe.

On paper the Honda e:Ny1 sounds like a solid crossover for Europe and its denser development. It looks to be about the size of a Honda HR-V, so it shouldn’t be too big to park. It’s electric, so you can drive it in zones that don’t allow internal combustion engine cars. And while the styling is a new direction for Honda, it’s still familiar enough that it’s recognizable.

The specs aren’t game-changing, but they’re still solid. It’s front-wheel drive, makes 201 hp and 228 lb-ft of torque, has a 68.8-kWh battery that should give it 256 miles of range and can charge from 10 to 80 percent in about 45 minutes. And if you’re into big screens, it’s got a 15.1-inch vertical touchscreen.

But oh man. That name. Why? Why did Honda have to go with an incomprehensible mishmash of letters and numbers with random capitalization and punctuation? We can work with hyphens even though I’d rather not. But colons do not belong in car names. How do you even pronounce the name? Ee en why one? Eenie one? Anyone? I’m sure it stands for something, but I can’t be bothered to go find that information, and I doubt anyone else wants to, either.

I used to think the Toyota bZ4X had the dumbest car name of all time. It’s like something Elon Musk would name one of his (What are we up to now? 80?) children. And I hate that I know it supposedly stands for Beyond Zero all-wheel-drive crossover. Or maybe it doesn’t. It’s so hard to care about names like this. Especially when there’s no real pattern to how things are capitalized.

Honda UK boss: why lower volumes are key to brand's future

Japanese firm's UK boss bullish about future market position despite shunning traditional corporate mandate

When its new e:Ny1, ZR-V and CR-V crossovers go on sale later this year, Honda will have one of the newest fleets of any mass-market manufacturer in the UK, and the firm is tipped to quickly start building its EV portfolio out into more crucial market segments in a bid to keep pace with fast-electrifying rivals.

However, Honda’s targets in the UK centre on profit, rather than volume, and passenger car boss Rebecca Adamson has no plans to take the fight to best-sellers Volkswagen and Ford, or to chase the lofty six-figure volumes that Honda achieved at its peak here in 2007.

Speaking to Autocar at the Japanese brand’s most important unveiling event in years, she explained why it’s in good shape as it settles into its new positioning and embraces electrification.

Honda e:Ny1 review

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?

“The e:NY1 is a very competent, middle-of-the-road, small electric SUV... Honda fans are unlikely to be dissatisfied”

The e:NY1 is a very competent, middle-of-the-road, small electric SUV from Honda – which will probably count as a success for the Japanese carmaker.

It’s the first serious EV from the company (what, did you think the Honda e was a mass-market, box office hit?), and it needs to lead to big numbers down the road as more electric cars are released on the e:N platform. It’s a decent - if unexciting - start, and Honda fans are unlikely to be dissatisfied with the experience.
